Okay, this thread is sorta freaking me out. Black bear: don't play dead/fight like hell. Got it. If it's dark and they all look black I'll just hope my dog steps up to the plate!

If it's after dark and the bear comes into your camp and attacks you, fight back regardless of the species, as the attack is probably predatory. And NEVER go hiking at night in bear country!

on the other hand, if you are out hiking at night in Grizzly country and you are attacked, just take a moment to run your hands up the shoulder and feel if there is a hump there. If yes, grizzly: play dead. Or feel up the ears. small and rounded, grizzly. pointed and longer: black bear.

Color doesn't necessarily help much anyway. I've seen a black grizzly before.
