It seems that volleyball players in south Alabama have killed hundreds of baby birds, and stacked eggs to bake in the hot sun. I think prosecution is in order.
Sad story, but I'm not sure what you do about it. It says the birds lost nesting habitat when their island was connected to an inhabited island. I was last on Treasure Island, Florida, in 2014. There was still a small colony of nesting black skimmers among the hotels and such. A few people made it a mission to rope them off. Most people respected the signs. But in the old days, before Treasure Island was developed, I bet there were a lot more birds.
We think of this Alabama island as "habitat," and Treasure Island as "not habitat," but that reflects our agenda. Lots of us own houses in places where birds like this used to live. A quick flyover of the Gulf Coast with Google maps reveals the problem for the birds. That said, this does seem callous at best. I think a message has to be sent. No traffic cop engages in long philosophical discussions of whether or not I'm a redneck, etc. when they pull me over. It's a crime.

What a ridiculous article--a virtual history of the island, the birds, their habitat, etc......and one sentence about the human predators authorities should be addressing.
IOW, expect more of the same.
