The owl probably had a mouse and the fox was hoping to scare it off so it could finish what the owl dropped. I have watched as a fox tried to get a doe to leave her fawn. The fox would close in and the doe would take off after the fox; but she always made it back to her newborn. The fox would not give up and would again close in just so the doe would leave the area. I never saw a fox get a newborn. But my thinking is that the fox would not try if it was not successful from time to time.
