This bird was in my yard - central IL - for a few days. I'm not sure if it was injured but I only saw it fly in very short bursts a few yards at a time. My guess is that maybe it's a grouse of some type? It was very round and plump and had more white than pictures of grouses I was able to find;
It's beautiful.... but not one I recognize. I'll look in my bird books...
well, I've great bird books but don't see one precisely like that. Body does look like some type of quail, bobwhite,
ptarmigan....possibly changing to non breeding plumage...
The Willow Ptarmigan shows white plumage adult non breeding.
The Rock Ptarmigan also white with a black eye stripe as adult non breeding....if it is a ptarmigan, he would be headed north to the tundra...
Not sure! Maybe an ornithologist will chime in...!

It's a color variation of bobwhite quail that was developed in a captive population. It probably escaped from someone's caged flock. It won't likely survive the winter on its own. If you could catch it and hand it over to someone who keeps quail, it would be an act of kindness.

Yes - all the links pointed to sellers who were raising them.
Unfortunately I actually saw this earlier in the year and still hadn't been able to identify it so he is long gone.
And I did notice it couldn't fly very far even though it wasn't obviously injured. Wonder if that's kind of bred into it the way it is for the modern turkey?
