Was taking the garbage out tonight when I heard some rustling behind some bushes. It was dark but I did manage to make out what appeared to be e a couple juvenile skunks. At the same time, I smelled the odor and immediately knew I got it good.

I came inside, then took a shower but the smell is still very strong.

Phew! My parents used this solution for people and pets:

hydrogen peroxide
dish detergent
baking soda

Works so much better than tomato juice! Vinegar can help but more for clothes, but the solution above works best. I couldn't remember the ingredient quantities but found this article that describes what we did in detail.

The more things you touch and the longer you wait the harder it is to get rid of it due to the oil.

To prevent being sprayed try to never surprise a skunk. Of course that is very difficult with pets. Most skunks will move off if they know that you are in the area. If you would see a garbage bag moving at night it would not be a great idea to go over and check it out. If you talk or make noise most skunks will move off if you give them space. They will spray when they feel they are trapped and there is no safe retreat. They are not agile and are not fast runners; so you have to give them time.

But you have to go order/buy this stuff. The solution is made up of things most people have around the house.

I tried this formula and I can say that it works! Despite waiting until the next day because I did not have hydrogen peroxide in the house, when I did get some from the store today and used it, it removed most of the stubborn odor. One interesting thing I noticed is that it also bleaches the skin. I think my skin tone went a few shades lighter after applying this formula.

i did not see a question about HOW to remove the skunk smell,
but, it seems, everyone else did....so, i was wrong.
here is what has worked for us:

1. discard all clothes worn. shoes, socks, belt, underwear, etc.
ALL and everything. trash. they will always stink.
2. wash exposed parts twice. last time, only my hands and head/neck
were uncovered. consider cutting your hair really short.
3. use some really cheap and smelly lotion to rub on those exposed parts.
we like the coconut smell. leave it on as long as you can tolerate it.
