This small tree is common along the roadways in western North Carolina. It is in bloom right now so that should help. The leaves are spear shaped, a little like a peach. I think it could be a choke cherry but don't know.

Thanks for the guess but I received an answer from NC Extension Service. It is a Sourwood and the honey that bees make from it is highly prized.

that pic looked like it had hanging seed pods. Nice smelling tree too.
