i guess sometimes humans aren't the only ones who kill just because they can.

The Smithsonian National Zoo said Tuesday that 25 American flamingos and a Northern pintail duck were killed a day earlier by a wild fox that entered the animals' outdoor habitat.

In addition to the killed birds, three flamingos were injured in the attack and are being treated by veterinarians at the facility, the zoo said in a statement. Staff at the zoo discovered the massacre early Monday morning and saw the fox before it escaped the habitat, according to the statement, which said live traps have now been set around the area to catch predators.

The fox that bit 9 people at Capitol Hill about a month ago was rabid. Maybe this one was as well.

Wow, that's horrifying that one fox could be responsible for so much carnage. Crazy.

The zoo keepers take good care of the animals and my heart goes out to them.

It’s just the instinct. Unfortunately these birds weren’t able to escape and so they were just sitting ducks. Foxes will do the same thing thing if they can get into a chicken coop.

There are actually services out there that will bring teams of minks and dogs to rat-infested properties. The minks drive the rats out of their burrows and the dogs catch them when they run out. The minks will also kill them if they can. It’s literally a massacre. Of course these animals are trained. But it’s really their instincts at play.

A fox climbed or jumped the 6' chicken wire fence into my poultry pen and took five chickens out. I found one alive but it died soon after, and the remains of one. Feathers were scattered in multiple directions so he didn't take them to one spot. He did it in 20 minutes. He was probably very close to the coop when I let the chickens and ducks out but I didn't see him. I assume the ducks were too heavy for him to take over the fence so he killed only chickens.

Bobcats also kill as many birds as they can. They'll eat what they want at the time and bury the rest under duff and debris.
