Coming to Nebraska
I just wanted to thank all of you who have been so helpful in answering my questions about Nebraska. My husband did get a job offer there, and we should be in Nebraska by mid-August.
Looking forward to meeting all of you friendly folks!

Coming to Nebraska
Yay!!!! Hope you like it here!!! My husband and I had recently attended a picnic and concert in the part in O'Neil. The singer that performed told jokes about how friendly Nebraskans are. He made the comment that every one he passed waved!!! He thought that strange at first! We realize this is true!!!
Welcome to Nebraska!!!

I'm not trying to scare you just want you to be prepared. Make sure if your basement is unfinished that you set up a comfy area just in case there's a tornado warning, so you don't have to sit on an uncomfortable chair in the middle of the night. I'm not sure they have much problem with them in the city but I believe you were interested in the Hickman area. It wasn't too many years ago a tornado wiped out the neighboring town of Hallam. Better to be safe than sorry.

Will do- I actually spoke with an old-timer there who told me all about that tornado three years ago. He was great! When I asked him if anyone got hurt, he said "naw, some old lady died, but that was because of a heart attack". I tried not to laugh, because of the way he said it! He was really helpful.
I hear if you move to Nebraska you have to be a Cornhusker fan. My realtor said if you're not a fan, don't tell anyone 'cuz they'll throw tomatoes at your house. I hope she was joking; if not, I guess I'm a 'husker fan!
Thanks again, guys!

You'll see when football season starts. If you go shopping on a game day it's a sea of red everywhere you look, it's not just the people going to the game. Yes, us Nebraskans take our beloved Cornhusker's very seriously. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Boise state kick the Oklahoma Sooner's butts last year, OS's are a huge rival of ours from way back. Tell someone that you know that the Huskers were called the Bugeater's when they first started out, that'll win over any Husker crowd. LOL!

Racechick,
Nah, you don't have to worry about Husker fans. I happen to be one, but don't get into the "rabid" side of it. In addition, besides being notoriously supportive of there team, they are also notorious for being polite. In fact, there are usually write ups in opposing teams newspapers, by fans and sportswriters, talking about how polite and courteous the hometown Husker fans are to the visiting team. There are places in the country you might get your house egged or tomatoed for not being a homtown fan (umm...like Boulder, CO), but not in Lincoln. Maybe some playful ribbing, but that's it.
That said, hopefully with time we can pull you to the dark side!

There are plenty of Nebraska fans here in Colorado (I am not one of them). They have their flags up, and they wear their shirts around town. A lot of people who live here are actually from Nebraska. I have been in both Omaha and Boulder at Thanksgiving when "the game" (CU-Nebraska) is usually played, and it is quite amusing. The last time I was in Omaha, the game was in Boulder. The World-Herald had days on end of coverage, mostly complaining about Boulder and the Boulderites. Here in Boulder, the visiting Nebraska fans are mostly ignored.
When I married my DH, his family had a reception for us in Omaha. I am from Pennsylvania, and almost a full year earlier, Nebraska had defeated Penn State. My new "family" felt it was extremeley hilarious to tell me over and over again how good a loser Joe Paterno is, how "we" (Nebraska), kicked the tar out of "you" (Penn State), etc, etc. I was ready to say I thought part of good sportsmanship was being a gracious winner! Interestingly, I did not attend Penn State, nor did my DH attend the U of Neb. My point is the ribbing can go beyond good natured at times.
However, I was ashamed of my state the last time Neb. played Penn State at University Park. The Penn State fans behaved atrociously. The next year, Neb. played the U of Pittsburgh, my alma mater, in Pittsburgh. There was a major flood going on and the Pittsburghers commented that the Nebraska fans were very helpful, as the flood waters entered hotel lobbies, etc. My daughter had a gymnastics meet that day and we took a TV to the meet to watch the game!

racechick, I can forgive you for being a die hard nascar fan, as I am also, as long as you're not rooting for the puss boy Gordon!

Ha Ha Ha!!! I read that one to my husband and he cracked up. HECK NO, we don't like 24. We're Jr. fans, and he like Tony Stewart and Robby Gordon (doing awesome today, isn't he?!). I like Sadler, too. Hopefully our neighbors are just like you!!
