I am a part time courier. Every Saturday I have to deliver to North Platte. Every Saturday evening (10 pm) when I am there it always seems like people are out of control. I fuel up and that Shell that is off the interstate to the north. Not the old one, but the newer one a block further up the road. When I am sitting there getting gas it NEVER fails that I see and hear things that blow me away. Idiots squealing their tires, people yelling from across the street, drunks walking through the gas station and people yelling obscene words from their vehicles. Last night was the first time someone directed it at me. While I was sitting their fueling up, some guy comes through the gas station (just cutting through to the next street) with a huge jacked up 4X4 and the passenger that was already hanging out the window looks right at me, points and yells, "What's up you POS lesbian F**K face?!?!?!? Your POS Ford is f**king gay as all hell!! DOOOOOSSSSSCCCCCHHHHHH!!!!!! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!! Then the driver stomped on the gas, just missed a car pulling into the gas station and drove over the curb through the grass looking like and idiot. And it didn't stop there! A minute later a heard some yelling from up the street. There were three people walking on the side walk yelling at passing cars for no apparent reason. Yelling swear words and throwing up their arms and hands as if to egg someone onto a fight. What is wrong with these people? It happens almost every time I deliver to this town. Is this just the norm??

First off sorry that kinda crap happened to you. North Platte is a nice town, I love it and never have , or had a problem...in fact leaving delawre in a day to move back. There are the occassional drunks there, but its not a standard thing, they were probally over at the touch me down there club (touch down club is the real name), at the bowling alley. I hope you at least called the cops, the station is right down the road.
Also are you talking about the Shell next to AppleBees?

Um...I'm not sure. If you are coming from Omaha and you get off at the main North Platte exit where that Village Inn is, you take a right heading towards the police station. You will see a Shell on your left. It is older and seems privately owned. Keep driving another block and there is another Shell that is well lit. That is the one that I am talking about.

I'm guessing he's talking about that Shell between the "ones" just north of the river bridge... That seems to be the turn around point for the high school (and high school drop-out) "cruisers." I've seen plenty of idiots in and through that parking lot during my visits to North Platte. I think every town has a place like that though...

I used to live in North Platte for a short period of time. Thats the type of behavior I observed more often than not. Granted the Touchdown Club is nearby and does not have a good rep for a reason. I lived there for 6 months and met 1 person beyond my co-workers. The non-drunks would be more friendly overall that is common. The drug problem is getting out of control, between the Touchdown Club and Kelsey's the police have their handful, and the town is going downhill.

I've been in North Platte most of my life and this is the kind of thing that makes many people stay home at night. Maybe if all the fools without a drop of class didn't spend their time becoming less and less interesting in the towns lackluster bars regular people would show up and everyone wouldn't have to choose between Applebees and Ruby Tuesdays every Friday. I don't know specifically what happened in this town but its in need of a few things. The interstate has probably kept North Platte alive but its symbolic of everything wrong with it. People stop to get what they can expect, standardized chain food and streets with no character because people with money would rather leave town for a weekend and hang out in Denver etc. There's no reason it shouldn't be a great place to live other than the clowns that impress themselves by making a scene and spend half of their checks on budlight bottles. Yeah, sure, those commercials are funny...

...something about the silent majority. We need to get off "it" and make this place worth stayin in.

I had a job in North Platte last summer so I stayed with several people I know and co-workers during my stay. As a young person in college I found little to do with my free time there except entertain myself at my friend's apartment with guitar practice and reading. I didn't meet a single person outside of work and it sounds like being under the drinking age was a blessing during my time there from reading some of the posts above. I was woken up more than once in the middle of the night by loud music or hot rodding cars. I found myself going home to Grand Island every weekend out of boredom. If I had to describe North Platte's appearance I would say it looks like it was frozen in the past from a time many years ago with hardly anything going for it in new development.
To sum it all up, I was offered the internship in North Platte again for this summer, but turned it down because I can't face another long season in that town despite my enjoyment of the work.

Smile dump or nice town

My apoligies to you for the twit people you are running into. There are some nice people here, but not 10 pm and after dark.
I have lived here most of my life, except when I was in my early 20's and I moved to Sioux Falls SD and then Denver CO to follow the bright lights. Got tired of the city life moved back in 85. It seemed ok then but now it is nothing but a doppie magnet, drunk trunk, and what ever else wanders out after dark. I personally do not go out anywhere after 6pm here. I thnk that it is like this everywhere, and I do not have an answer to the huge question about this.
There is really nothing here to do, and it seems the only things we can get here for jobs is in the bar/lounge business as it makes money which now is the big thing, with the economy. We have a lot of people out of work, and I personally do not know where they get the money to drink, dope, run the streets. I am on a disability income, and it runs pretty darn tight, but I make it and live frugally but very happy.
I again, offer you my apoligies, there are very nice people here, and very generous, but the other half of the popluation sucks. We have a huge population of the retired and other that volunteer, and help, we have wonderful churches here that help, we have a wonderful new homeless shelter that helps families get back on their feet and give them hope. But its just not after dark.
Please do not judge these idiots on the whole town. But as you have commented, it puts a black eye on our community.
I hope that I helped you answer some questions.

This thread isn't really related to jobs etc. but I thought I would comment since it doesn't have nothing to do with it, and was brought up. There is not a large quantity of large employers in North Platte. And still, the economy is not extremely diversified, despite being a regional hub, because the region is fiscally conservative, low in parts per square mile and yes aging. Still, there hasn't been explosive irresponsible growth, resulting in relative resiliency. We haven't overpowered the area's carrying capacity, even if our small town charm is heavily compromised. Compare unemployment statistics and living standards elsewhere. There are places in MI with %25 unemployment. CA, MN, IL, NJ etc all have serious funding issues which reflect conditions such as employment and the costs of crime and heavy infrastructure.

NP: roughly %5 unemployment, which is comparable to any other time. It’s only a guess, but people here are more hesitant to get assistance which plays into the facts and figures. Spending, long term job stability and income are likely to wash around more than most people would like. But, the heat is running in almost every home, and there is a network that cares about supporting those in need, a benefit of being in a town too small to grow.

I don't enjoy drive by heckling, but it’s particularly benign and unlikely to fester when composed of a single derogatory term. Driver, you didn't even put these jokers into the defensive and they still managed a pathetic come back.
