Default You can see where your Nebraska tax dollars are spent

Thanks to State Treasurer, Shane Osborn, everyone can see just where our tax dollars are spent. I am not sure if 100% of state spending is posted yet but he is working on it. This will make the information available to keep those receiving and spending tax dollars honest. Instead of having just ONE State Auditor anyone can assist with this information. Check it out at
http://nebraskaspending.gov/

This is one more good reason to keep the office of State Treasurer that we voted on 11/02/2010.

Saw your post, checked out that site, thought it was pretty cool.

Then hopped over to read some news, and found this:

NU students' financial aid information posted on state treasurer's website

That is the article that inspired my comment. The headline of that article is misleading. It implies that information that might be useful to an identity thief is on the website. That is not so! The only information listed is those who have received State money. I haven't browsed the site very thoroughly yet but I would think there is probably another section that lists payments made to the State and by the person making it.

I think this is a good thing. It enables any private citizen to track where Public monies are going.

Apparently the Treasurer's office decided it might not have been a good idea to post the "confidential" information after all:

State Treasurer's Office takes NU report off website

I'm all for governmental accountability, and I never did see exactly what was posted in order to form my own opinion, however, they do need to balance accountability with privacy.
