When compared to actual metropolitan areas, safety is a non-issue in places like Grand Island. You have absolutely nothing to worry about.

As far as weather, the tornado thing is way overblown. You note that the big storm that was mentioned above was in 1980 (meaning 31 years ago). And I don't care where you live there will always be something that you have to be concerned with (i.e., earthquakes, hurricanes, flooding, tsunamis, tornadoes, and etc.). So, again, the weather shouldn't deter you.

I didn't mean to infer that the town of GI gets blown apart every year by tornadoes, but someone coming from the east coast has no clue what the weather in the midwest is like. Just suggesting that he make himself aware of the weather patterns there. And I don't care what you all say about the tornadoes back there, I grew up just outside Aurora and I do not for one second miss living there in May and June when the tornado activity is rampant. And yes they do still occur often!

Yes back when you were a kid there were more tornadoes.

We will have to wait and see what we get this year.

I like GI as a city. It is near the sandhills and other cool natural scenery. GI is growing very nicely as a city. The latter part of the decade it began to grow by over a 1,000 people per year which is substantial for a city that is about to break 50,000 people. It is also near two other growing cities in Kearney and Hastings, so the region has been basically serving the state as a second cluster of cities besides the behemoths Omaha and Lincoln.
