I began canoeing this river in my early 20's some 30 odd years ago. Way before Smith Falls state park, when you gained permission to walk up the canyon to that secluded fall. I've witnessed such stupidity as mentioned above. Not only at the falls but while floating the river as well. People diving off tubes into shallow water, cutting feet on discarded trash in the river and its banks, and attempting to climb banks that just weren't meant for climbing.
Not only to they put their lives in danger, but lives of those with them and their rescurers as well.
I have sadly sat by a table where a family talked of their recent trip on the river. Too many times I have heard the parents say, never again shall they return. Not because of the natural scenery and beauty of the area, but due to the others and their behavior they encountered on the river. I have viewed the remains along river banks of empty coolers, have helped pick up discarded trash a time or two also.
When another groups actions begin to effect another parties trip, sometimes with just load language, sometimes even with flashing, or other forms of rudeness, it has gone to far. Courtesy can go a long ways in improving the river for all to enjoy. Making it an enjoyable trip for all.

I too started my canoing and tubing back in the late 60's. Back then you were surprised to see another canoe and when you did, it was someone you knew. I no longer go down the river for the very things you have disclosed in your message. That and VantWinkle and some others starting up the Scenic River thing, really changed it all for the worse. I own some land along the river, 4 acres is all, and I'll never be able to use it for our retirement home build site because of all that crap. It'll just sit there growing grass forever. Funny how some outfitters can build their campgrounds but a landowner can't build a retirement home within view of the river anymore. Valentine got greedy and the average person there paid the price.
For the person who thinks the river is tame, that may be the case now but years past, people drowned. There used to be holes and underwater obstacles which probably don't exist now. That is a good thing.
My brother in law and I were going to be the 1st on the river in April of '72 and then thought we might want to drive down the road to Barry bridge and check for ice. LOL, we found an ice jam with pieces sticking up in the air over 20ft. high all jammed just before the bridge. Needless to say, we found something else to do that day.
