To respond to Todd04, I think there are as many things to do here as you want to find. Last weekend there was a Chocolate Fundraiser for Theatre West, where 500 people attended. I spoke to a gentleman who had moved home after living in New York for 30 years and he said it was better as many things he had seen there. Said it was a great show and he would certainly come back next year. Next weekend the Midwest Theater is hosting a film festival showing films from around the world. Next week the Young Professional Group is hosting a Mardi Gras Comedy Night featuring a sketch writer from Saturday Night Live from New York. Our local Community College Women's Volleyball team finished first in the nation last year, and I believe 3rd this year. There games are very exciting. In the spring there is a 'Friday Afternoon Club' of sorts that canoes the river and hikes the monument. These are just a few of the many things to do. You just have to get out and look! There are also tons of volunteer activities if one is interested. I usually suffer from not enough time, instead of not having enough things to do, and I am single person!

I am looking into an elementary teaching position in Scottsbluff. What are the schools like? My husband is a graphic/commercial artist, and we're also wondering about the availability of jobs in his area. Finally, we have a daughter who is about a year old. Our babysitter in Iowa is FABULOUS, and she's the only reason I'm hesitating on moving... What is childcare like in the Scottsbluff area? Thanks!!!

I don't think they have a big store like Borders, Barnes & Noble, or Hastings. But I think they have a store of some size called Copperfield's. My sister, who works for a supplier, has them as an account. I think they have two locations, one of which is in or near the Monument Mall.

book stores
Yes, Copperfield Books (308-632-3000) is located at the Mall in Scottsbluff. There is also a bookstore called the Book Nook which is located downtown at 11 E 17th St. (308-632-4661). There is also The Bible Book Shop at 14 E 16th St 308-632-8711, as well. Good luck.

Don't forget the pubic library. If the librarian is "not to busy" they can get any book from any NE library for 2 weeks for free.
My Librarian, Linda got my son both of the original Walt Disney Witch Mountain books. Each one from a different library in the state.

Location, location, location.
No population gain and very minor population loss is fine with me.

Yeah, no population gain and very minor loss means no new, good-paying jobs, no fresh influx of fresh ideas... just more of the same status-quo that is killing the community. The only people who don't want growth are the wealthy (wanting to keep Scottsbluff as their own little playground and the other Scottsbluff residents as sudo-slaves in service and retail jobs where the wealthy can treat the non-wealthy like crap) and the retired (who have made their money, own their houses, and don't want anything to change... just because most elderly don't like change).
Yes, the community seems to be slowly dying. Why, because there are too few jobs and activities to keep young families here, yet we are close enough to areas that are offering what young families are looking for (Cheyenne, Rapid City, Denver, etc.) that it should be (in theory) easy to find something better. The schools in this area are WONDERFUL and the teachers are (for the most part) AWESOME... but when you hear all the complaining about how little teachers make and how we need to pay teachers more... and a teaching gig is one of the best paying jobs anyone is ever going to find around Scottsbluff, NE... of course the education is great
I know I sound very negative, and I probably am... I live here and, after over 10 years, I am finally getting used to it. After 10 years, I am finally really getting to know some people (it is a very cliquish community and, if you aren't from here, it takes awhile for people to accept you... you have to be very outgoing ((which I am not)) to make friends fast here.) I know very few people who are not originally from here who liked it here immediately. Scottsbluff is the kind of place that you can get used to if you don't like it when you first get here. By the time you actually start getting used to it, you're close enough to retirement age (age, not actual retirement... very few jobs around here pay enough to actually allow you to retire... we do have a Walmart in need of greeters, so jobs for "retirement age" people do exist ) that you actually start to fit in.
