My family and I are thinking about moving to Gering, NE. Can anyone tell me what its like? How are the schools? WE have a 4 year old daughter. What is the crime rate like? The weather? I've been looking all this stuff up online, but its always better I think to hear it from someone who actually knows, not someone trying to make the place look great. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I don't live in Gering, and never have, but travel there about once a month for work.

It seems like a nice town. If I had a reason to move to that area, I wouldn't mind it at all. I've been told that Gering schools are a little nicer than Scottsbluff.

Crime rate? Compared to what? Like any area of about 25K population, there is crime. Thefts, assaults, etc. Random violent crimes are rare in the area. Most property crime is easily preventible in a place like that. It is a big enough town you want to lock your doors and not leave valuables laying around.

Weather is like what you would expect on the high plains. Definitely a four season area. The humidity is low and the wind blows a lot.

I think there are decent job opportunties around, and you are relatively close to the front range of Colorado for big city amenities if you need them.

We actually almost moved to Gerins/Scottsbluff earlier but took a different job opportunity. I really liked the area, the schools are good and for the area there are a LOT of parks, a very nice community feel. The homes are very reasonably priced, and you will very easily be able to tell the not so nice area's and the nice area's it's pretty obvious, ha. If you are looking to buy let me know as I know a wonderful realtor there. The weather is nice much more windy then some other area's, and while it is 4 seasons they do not get near the amount of snow that we get in Omaha. I would also move to Gering over Scottsbluff b/c the city of Gering pays for a good amount of utilities for a very reasonable cost. There is really not a lot of crime, I mean there is some, especially in the not so nice area's, but it's nothing slightly to worry about. I mean I would never tell anyone to leave their home unlocked no matter how small the town, thats just not overly intelligent in my opinion. There are a good amount of jobs around, there is a good hospital there and a lot of city sponsored activities. I would absolutely recommend the move, it's a great place to raise kids, big enough that there is a Target and Home Depot, but small enough to give you the small town friendly feel. Best of luck!!!
