Don't forget to research Papillion NE. Moving from California to rural Nebraska will present a huge culture shock for you and your teenager. Culture shock meaning you were looking for more normality in your life and those towns aren’t always considered normal to anyone other than the locals. Papillion would seem as much more of a moderate adjustment with low property taxes/crime and great schools. Maybe you can visit to find out for yourself =-).

IF you are looking for a bigger city.
Lincoln, Omaha and Omaha's surrounding cities are all nice.
Actually Papillion, NE, a city right outside of Omaha, just got ranked #6 out of the top 100 cities to live in the US. No other Nebraska city is ranked.
My husband and I are seriously considering moving there.
But, from what I've heard all these suggested towns and cities are nice!
Hope you find something you like!

Default give Chadron a look

Very progressive indeed... including the crime, drugs, drive by shootings, home invasions, illegal immigrants by the millions, anti-Christian sentiments, pregnant children in school... usual fare in a liberal, godless, State government.

I am looking for a more "sane" environment to raise my 9th grade child and live in peace. Looking for a town that values Christianity. One that offers friendliness to new comers. Affordable housing (buyers market) with nice sized property lots, lower property taxes, good schools, an older community is preferable. A place where children can play outside without fearing for their safety. Anyone know of a place like this?

Look at Chadron NE. It has 5000 friendly (mostly) people with a State College of 2,000+, hospital and other medical services. Most people don't realize the beauty of this small NW corner of Nebraska. Beauty, peace, hunting, it's all here. The schools are good and small enough to preserve the personal touch.
The College, the Forest Service, & the Job Corps all offer employment and bring in people from throughout the country which enhances the cultural diversity of the people. Everything you need is here.
Even a casino 40 minutes away.
Some of your "wants" may require driving.
We are two hours from shopping, Scottsbluff, and Rapid City SD and four hours from Denver. We have two flights daily to Denver as well as a daily van service.
If you want quiet and beauty and peace, look no further.

I have lived in 15 towns across Nebraska from rural areas of populations of 300+ to Lincoln population around 250,000. I find Seward, NE to be nice. The town is about 30 miles west of Lincoln and a short distance off I-80. It is a college town but housing is reasonable. The others who responded are right too. Aurora and York are good options. Both are big enough to have the essentials, York more so than Aurora, but are small enough your kid wont get lost in the school system. I found when I lived in the western part of the state, it is nice scenary but it was harder to fit in with the locals. I would stay east of Kearney. Possible websites for housing would include Wood Bros Realty or Century Realty. Both cover many towns and cities across Nebraska.

Two very good (and different) suggestions in Papillion and Chadron. I live in Papillion and my son lives in Chadron. They are both great choices but meet very different needs. Do you want more urban or more rural - that will help lead you to the right one.

Uh huh. The rural areas are declining. However, if you look at the "cities", they're growing. It's a reflection of the nation as a whole, albeit like everything else, it just took longer before Nebraska caught up to that trend. And no, it's not the large growth occuring in places like Lexington (thank heaven) but growth is growth. And as your own stats showed, non-farm employment is also growing in western Nebraska. Ie, jobs are out there if you want one.

but most of the growth in Nebraska will always be in the Omaha and Lincoln areas.
Well duh. lol That's how it's been since the state started.

Additionally, I'm sick and tired of the crime, the "ghetto birds" (police helicopters) flying overhead at all hours of the night, the incredibly poor schools (we now homeschool our kids), a racially and socioeconomically divided city, the inability to let our children play in the front yard without fear, etc., etc., etc.

I'm sure others will disagree with me, but we can't wait to get out of the city and find a calmer, slower, more peaceful existence in which to raise our kids and spend the rest of our lives.
Wow, sounds very close to our situation. Unless you're actually living with your nose right in it (as described above), it can be easy for people to not understand the reality of living in such a god-forsaken environment. It is utterly demoralizing and very, very stressful to be constantly "on guard". I believe, after living a lot of my life "on guard", that I can identify with people who live in "war zones". We have had more than one occasion where people have been shot (some killed) near our home. One time a gang member who habitually harassed us and our property, was shot by a CHP officer just feet from our house ON our property--this individual went to prison for crimes he had been committing (not for harassing of us).

We go through periods of having the helicopters searching our area constantly too. Try sleeping through that noise. My favorite thing to do when that happens though... turn on a very big and bright area light for the alley--where criminals like to hide--when the helicopters are searching.

*sniff sniff* think I'm gonna miss the excitement ... NOT!

Good luck with your move and I pray you find a nice place.

So far as jobs:
I have to agree with Jasper (btw, my 7 year old's name is Jasper). I grew up in eastern Nebraska, but have lived in western NE since I headed off to college 15 years ago. I won't go back.
Jobs are plentiful so long as you're in an area where people are plentiful(ish). It doesn't matter whether you're in eastern NE or western, if you're near a larger town you'll have no trouble finding a job.
However, if you're near a tiny town in BFE (as I am) you'd better do something like nurse or teach.
Or ranch.

My part of the state (SW corner) isn't growing. We're stagnant, though. That's better than dying... :P
But most of the panhandle is on the grow! Chadron, the Bluffs, Alliance, Kimball, Sydney, etc. And a lot of the little towns around them are along for the ride.
Kansas comment was funny.

I don't nurse or teach or ranch. Maybe I'll sell tacos door to door... hmmm... love mexican food.

I'm gonna give an update on where I chose to live at the end of these messages .. hope I chose well.
