Lincoln, NE is a state capital and a college town, both of which are resistant to economic downturns. As a bonus, it's located in the Great Plains, which didn't bother with the bogus real estate market of the 2000's.

I don't think you have any trouble at all finding a job if you're not picky. You may well find one in your field. Good luck! Lincoln is a great town.

We have a lot of jobs but the pay is not always the best. My observation is that many unemployed prefer drawing unemployment to actually going to work. In my block I know at least five men that have been rejected for a job or fired from a job for testing dirty. That is just in the last year and folks I know. If you have a clean work history and can pass a drug test you should find work.

From what you've said here, I know you live in an area of the city where many people struggle. Do lots of your neighbors have college degrees like the OP? He doesn't sound like someone who wants to live on unemployment or does drugs. I'm just saying that your perspective may be a little biased. Someone who's an honest, hardworking person with an education shouldn't have any problem at all, especially if they're willing to work their way up in a position vs. starting out at the top. Because of state government and the university, Lincoln has a relatively high number of professional jobs vs. other communities. That's the job market that the OP is qualified for. He may have to start out for a few months working retail or working in the service industry, but something in his professional field should open up for him at some point. Signing up for a temp agency could be a really good way to get his foot in the door somewhere.

mb1547,
If you are familiar with Lincoln I live in the area just East of Lincoln High a few blocks. I am retired (65) and I am living here because I needed a garage to keep some of my toys (metal working and woodworking stuff0. A garage similar to mine in one of the better neighborhoods would cost quite a bit. I'm single so living in a dump doesn't bother me LOL.

There are several neighbors in the immediate area attending UNL or SouthEast Community College. Just a W.A.G but the biggest percentage of the women in the area are single mothers raising kid/s without any help from the fathers. Work A While and several of the temporary day job places are where most of the Men that do work go. Many of the neighbors are actually fairly decent workers from what I have observed but they can't keep a steady job because they always test positive. Usually for MJ. The Meth and Crack users don't even try to get a job. They usually steal or sell drugs or just get money from the young women that are stupid enough to give it to them.

Then there are the good people that are raising their kids and working their tails off to get enough money put together to move to a better part of town. After I sold my farm and moved in to Lincoln I lived in one of the exclusive neighborhoods on the South side. The people in that neighborhood may have had better educations but they still had problems. The big difference in the two neighborhoods is that Alcohol was the big drug of choice in the SouthEast side of town. Child support issues were something BOTH areas have in common.

I have work I need done at times but even though it might be cheaper to hire someone full time it just isn't worth the hassles. It is easier for me to get the jobs done with contract labor and not have to put up with all the Red Tape etc.A lot of businesses are doing that now to avoid paying benefits and I think it is going to get even worse.

Lincoln has a lot of fast food and retail growth. Fast food and retail pay minimum wage...........Sure its a job, but does it really pay the bills?

Default Job a holic.

There are actually a LOT of jobs here in Lincoln. If people tell you different, it's just because they're not trying hard enough, trust me.

If you look on places like Monster.com, Indeed.com, and even Craigslist has some good ones. Just be persistent and you will get job offer after job offer.
