Browsing around some other threads, there seems to be a lot of variation in what people believe the population of Grand Island is and whether or not it's growing.

Current US Census estimates place the city at 50,000 and as of Feb 28, 2013, the Census recognizes it as a Metropolitan area. The US Census has included Howard, Merrick and Hamilton Counties to Hall County and the new county estimates give the Grand Island Metropolitan Statistical Area a population of 83,462. That's an increase of around 6,000 people since 2000, so it's modest and steady growth.

For the record, neither Kearney nor Hastings are included in the totals and maintain their own status as "Micropolitan Areas". Hastings "Micro" area is estimated currently at 31 thousand while Kearney's comes in at about 52 thousand.

That being said, the Tri-cities area now accounts for an overall population of over 165,000.
