Yes Sidney is a small (by most standards) town.
Yes Sidney is in Western Nebraska with all the good and bad that comes with that.
Yes Sidney is a little ways away from a "big" city.
Beemer if you don't want to live in Sidney that is fine, but I have not seen one thing that you have said that makes it a bad town to live in. I hate to tell you that people who live in Sidney have kids, and they turn out just fine. I don't think they a third arm growing out of their forehead or anything.
Yes "small" town living is not for everyone, that does not mean no one should live in a "small" town. Sidney has a lot going for it, and I think it would be a good place to raise kids.

And it is true. In this part of the world, that's a good way to judge the population of a town, and better still, their viability.
There are half a dozen WalMarts in the western 2/3 of the state (past GI/Hastings). In other words, if a town is big enough to have one it's going to have a big impact on the surrounding area because it's a trade center and draws people from all over the area on a regular basis.
(The same is true of the few communities in the western 2/3 that have a college of some sort)

My husband had his character assassinated and his career ruined in Sidney, NE. He was a newcomer, a liberal to boot, who liked to talk politics. A dangerous person for a small town, I guess, so they ruined his life.

Small towns are like weird families. You can be accepted, but you have to realize that there are relationships and connections and beliefs you don't really understand yet. You have to move slow, otherwise people automatically assume the new guy thinks he's above it all...
True or not is irrelevant- perception is what counts.

I'm not trying to bash the rest of replies your getting, but I think they are a little tough on Sidney as well as the rest of the Western part of the State. Sidney a small town with a big heart unless your a screwed up person. People are friendly and if you return the friendship you will enjoy living there. The area is made up of farmers & ranchers and of course Cabela's a LARGE Outdoor Shop is the bread & butter for Sidney. Located on I-80 lets you connect to larger cities east & west. You will find the cost of living low and schools are good. Relax and look forward to your move.

i'll be careful not too judge places i dont know "as much" about. but i still think your walmart thing is funny.
