Funny, German71 - We flew into Rapid and Valentine was the furthest EAST we made it! LOL Yes, I loved it there. Posted some pics of the river and reservoir in the Nebraska Pictures. Cedar Canyon was good food - their salad bar was the most different I had eaten from in a long while! - and the meat was amazing as were the portions. But we wandered down to the Bunkhouse - closed for two weeks right now for renovation, soon to reopen - and Jordan's too; they were cheaper and very different food. The Ham and navy bean soup at the Bunkhouse is to die for! Westward in Cody, there is a small restaurant with the best danged homemade handpatted Angusburgers I've ever eaten and perfect onion rings (I consider myself a conoisseur of onion rings!! LOL). I hear that the Rosebud Casino has an excellent buffet but we never made it out there.
The most impressive thing, though, was the people. Amazingly interested in everything, unfailingly helpful and straightforward, and (sigh) educated with common sense. That was almost as refreshing as the water...

We went to the sandhills lounge and smokeys bar both in longpine which both had good food and service and it only cost 21.00 at smokeys for me,my two kids and my wife to eat and i had 3 whiskeys with lunch. I also liked the people who are just as you described them.It is good to know that a person can move to such a place and get away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the country.

homesick!
I was looking up stuff about Long Pine and somehow managed to find myself here.
Your talk made me miss home. I grew up around Long Pine/Ainsworth and miss it tremendously. I don't get back like I probably should and now I am hungry on top of it.
I have spent many hours at the creek and the river. Meadville is fun- the water's warm and toasty compared to Long Pine (but I enjoy Long Pine the most).

From one Brown County resident to another
It's nice to know that Long Pine and Meadville have good memories for you. If you like the Springview area and want to return, there is a house for sale on the edge of Springview that you might want to look at. Big cities are nice for shopping but I enjoy the quiet life that smaller towns have. We have alumni weekend June 27-28 in Ainsworth so lots of follow classmates will be back. email to: cmizner@threeriver.net

Well get your tail end back here then! People just don't know what they are missing by not visiting out here. Long Pine Creek, Plum Creek, Keller Park, the Niobrara River Valley. The sandhills to the south, does it get any better than this? Doubtful

A friend of mine went to Long Pine in October with the promise of work for two years in the construction business..He was working for a guy named Chris Rehkolpf(not sure of the spelling on that one). He ended up working a few odd days here and there in a six week period and this guy Chris turned out to be a drunk, screwing him out of almost $600.00. He also got screwed by a guy he met in the bar to do some work and this jerk paid him but stopped paymant on the check he gave him. I wouldn't trust ANYONE in the town of Long Pine for a second.
It would be cool if anyone had any info on this guy Chris.

whiskeyj, I know that construction folk are very mobile normally - follow the work, and all - but I have to say I would hesitate to go to a place I've never seen to be employed in a 'promised' job of ANY type for two years, especially in this iffy construction economy. A guy he met in a bar? Doesn't sound like a viable business meeting. I've met lots of folks in bars, but certainly never credit anything they say unless they can say it outside of that venue!
And I sure wouldn't judge a whole area or town because of two sleazeballs. Maybe the reason they didn't have any real work for your friend to do was because all of the decent folk thereabouts knew them and their work already, and wouldn't trust them with a 10 foot Pole (or even a six foot Irishman).

Man, we used to ravage Long Pine on Saturday night at the Long Pine drive in theatre. A few cases of bootlegged beer, sorry, and then a run through town after the movie. Gotta watch going down Kyner Road crossing the creek though. That hard left turn will roll your car, not fun. Seriously, Long Pine is a really cool place to live and have fun. Take a walk across the old CN&W railroad bridge and just stand and ponder all the beauty below you. I have caught more brook trout and rainbow from Pine Creek than anywhere else west of the Mississippi and I've fished a lot of streams. Just make sure you have permission. Hidden Paradise is still a great place to visit and tube but be ready for teeth chattering cold water even at the end of July. Great fun! Used to have an awesome pavillion there and weekend dances were the best around. Get enough folks on the dance floor and it would bow with the weight. Climb up the hill and watch all the action below. If you have been there, you are missing a link in your life.
