Cody - just went thru threre on Saturday (was supposed to be on Friday; however, had an unexpected day/nite in Hay Springs due to the Springtime blizzard).... nice place! Love that part of the country...
There was another station (90.1 - "The Voice of the Lakota Nation") that must have been coming from Pine Ridge - was Indian chants for about 30 minutes then they announced time to switch formats and went to Barbara Mandrell - I had to laugh - both Cowboys and Indians on one station - talk about diversity and everyone getting along. Not sure what about it struck me funny but it did. I listened for awhile and the chants were interesting to listen to.

Hey there!
Dave 1215, just had to let you know that the Lakota Nation station you were listening to is not by Pine Ridge - but is actually somewhere in the Mission, ST. Francis area. The Gov't put up that station so the Native's could use it to learn to broadcast and get jobs elsewhere, if they wanted. It has been there for quite sometime. And is one of the strongest stations in the area.
I haven't been home for almost 30 years, at least not for any extended length of time, but my son keeps me uupdated on things and changes. My mom, rest her soul, used to love to listen to a group that used to go into the station and play live, they called themselves "The Skins". My mom thought they were GREAT - and they were very good.
Now, I don't want you to think I was putting in my 2 cents to stir anything up. I am just proud that something like that, in such a small town area, has something so good. They used to call the chants - round dances, when I was a kid. They played a round dance and dedicated it to everyone that sent in the names of people that had bithdays on that day. And that station is so strong, you can listen to it from almost Chadron to not quite to Bassett. You can listen to it, when nothing else will come in.The station is a real assett to a somewhat radio desolate area. The one station you could always count on for school closings in the winter.
In the few quick trips back home, I always look forward to listening to it. Probably more of a nostalgia thing, than anything else. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that it doesn't come from Pine Ridge (although they may have one too?) but is actually more north of Kilgore and would be on the Rosebud Reservation - I imagine.
Rosebud Res. is also home to a nice little casino north of Valentine. I hear they have great food there, as well. I stopped there after having 6 teeth pulled by the best Dentist in the country. Dr. Gunner, in Winner, is definitely worth the extra drive to go to - if you need any work done on your teeth. So the casino may have looked a bit nicer than usual, given the pain pills I was on! LOL! And is the reason I am not able to say for certain that the food is good, I wasn't able to eat anything. But I have heard many compliments from the folks back home.
When they built the radio station - there was some controversy over it - but I think it turned out to be a good thing. Just another diamond in the rough in the heart of the Sandhills! I was just surfing the web, and saw this, and had to let you know of the origin of the Cowboys & Native songs.

It's kind of cool, I think, that the Gov't did a service not only for the Natives, but also for the area as well.
