Hello, there! I hope you all are braving this winter storm well. My family and I have plans to drive through Nebraska on Friday (en route to North Dakota from Dallas), and I was wondering if the road conditions on the major highways (35) will be safe. Can any of you friendly Nebraska folks give me some insight? I've looked at all the maps and forecasts, but it's best to get the info. from the people who are actually there living in it.
Thanks so much! |

Well, the internet says chance of snow showers on Friday, that is the first I heard of that, the local tv has been saying it is suppose to clear up. The roads are still not the best here in south central Nebraska today but by Friday I don't see any problems as it is suppose to warm up a little and the crews will have plenty of time to work Here is a road conditions link http://www.511nebraska.org/ndortip/index.jsp
or you can call 511 when your on the road in case this Friday snow turns out. I'm guessing you'll be on 81 most of the time (I-35 turns into I-135 and then US 81) so if things look dicey there is a nice gas station in Hebron (not far from KS) to check conditions, then there is York, Columbus and Norfolk along the way, all towns with plenty of hotels, restaurants, gas, etc.. US 81 is 4-lane expressway from KS to just north of York and from just south of Columbus to just north of Norfolk. Since you are going up north I would suggest putting some winter gear in your car (blankets, flashlight, water, etc..) and keep your tank over 1/4 in case things get dicey somewhere and you have to stop, if you haven't already thought of that! If you have any ?'s ask away, I'll try to watch the weather sometime this evening and see what our local tv guys are saying and post it for you. |

The roads should be fine as long as we don't get more snow and ice by the time you come through.

Watched the news at 5. The local guy said that there is a good chance of snow Friday, Friday night, it doesn't look like a major storm, maybe a couple of inches. So something to be cautious about, but your not going to get stuck or stranded, and in my opinion the state does a pretty decent job on the main routes. Will update if things change.
