Severe Weather Around North Platte/Brady area
I will be staying with my aunt and uncle this summer cutting hay for a guy they know. They live between Brady and Maxwell so I was wondering how often can I expect severe weather? Are there many tornadoes? My uncle says the whole time I am out there this summer (June-july) we will only see around 2 severe storms or so. What do you guys think? I am terrified of severe thunder storms and tornadoes. Is really that bad or will there not be much severe weather?

There is someone on here who has a great link to UNL's weather stats, so hopefully they will see this forum and post or I can search for it later. We usually get the most severe weather during the spring, but that usually extends into June. In the summer we still get weather but it just isn't as frequent. We are in tornado alley but I've lived here all my life (most of it in the Kearney, Grand Island, Hastings region, where we have some of the highest tornado numbers in the state) and I have never seen one and I don't want to because I hate the things! I don't know where you are from but it can get hot here and sometimes you thankful for the storms coming through for the rain and the cool air.

7mag,
You will be just fine. Just listen to the ones who have been around in Nebraska for a bit and they will take care of you. Just remember that when they run you run, when they hide you hide.
Here is the link that I have given to several others about Nebraska weather and it also has links to other parts of America and parts of the world as well. Take your time looking through this link and let me know how you like it.

Also I am trained to watch for these storms and have been in the path of some of them as well, yet I am still here. Have any questions feel free to post here or you can PM me the choice is yours.

Living in Nebraska is not just a job, it is also an adventure. You will have a good time and you will be just fine. Where are you coming from if I may ask?

Nice I once lived in Fort Morgan when I was a kid. I still have family living in the Greeley area. They live the Eaton area just north of Greeley.
If you like trout fishing head to Ogallala and fish the lake at the base of Big Mac which is just north of Ogallala. The fishing is great in this lake and the channels that come out of this lake as well are very good for trout fishing.

If you can handle severe storms in Greeley you will be fine in Nebraska. Yes we do get a lot more tornados but you probably have a much better chance of winning the lottery than encountering a tornado while you are here.

And tornadoes really depend on the year. Sometimes they're frequent and sometimes they're not.
Though I will mention, a close friend of my husband and mine ranches south of Brady and he was completely wiped out by a tornado this summer (2007)... The only thing that survived was the house (the only thing he wishes wouldn't have survived) The shop, barn, chicken coop (and chickens) were all gone. The combine was bent in on itself. An old car wound up in a tree in the front yard... He's still digging out from the mess. : (
