Actually Valentino's is a Nebraska thing, suprised no one mentioned it. There also a part of the Amazing Pizza Machine in Omaha, a great place to take kids.

I've never been to the original in Lincoln. (My folks used to eat there when Dad was still in law school, so I'm surprised we never visited on a Memory Lane trip...)
But one thing I've noticed about Valentino's is that their chains are kind of hit or miss. For example, the Valentino's in their new location in NP is good (the old one wasn't). The one in Ogallala can be really bad... The one in Chadron was fantastic (back when I was in college, the folks took us there everytime they came out to visit and said it was every bit as good as the original, maybe even better) but it has since sold out and become a Pizza Ranch. Consequently, I tend to be kind of hesitant about mentioning Vals unless I know which one we're talking about.

Speaking of pizza joints, it's not quite in Nebraska, but pretty close-- Charlie's Pizza in Yankton, SD is well worth the trip!

Actually I have never liked Val's Pizza that much. Something about their tomato paste just isn't right too me. I'll take a Pizza Hut thin crust Supreme any day over Val's.

They do have a great buffet though.

Val's is a signature sweet sauce that you either like or don't

If going with a pizza chain then remember that Godfather's started in Ralston... a bar (Wild Willey's) that started serving pizza - 96th & Q in Ralston.

El Pariso (Mexican Restaurant) in Cozad
Can't remember the name, but there's a neat steak place overlooking Lake McConnaughy (Get there at dusk and dine while watching the sunset over Big Mac)
Also at Ogallala, The Subway Station (I think that's the name) - absolutely the best pies anywhere and really good subs, too.
Alley Rose in Kearney and also The French Cafe there.

Agreed with French Cafe in Kearney and Chances R in York. When the French Cafe opened, it was always packed; years later there was hardly anyone in but the food was just as good.

Alley Rose went way downhill about '99 and hadn't recovered by the time I left the area. ('01)

I wondered if Alley Rose was still there . . . that's too bad . . . I had some REALLY good food there, but it was pricey - kind of a "special occasion" place with some unique menu items. Small town Nebraska's probably not the most ideal place for something like that - I think most Nebraskans prefer steak & potatoes and comfort foods.

There is a Valentino's in Sioux Falls, SD. The food is good, but not exceptional. It has been there since the late 1980s and is doing well.

There are some restaurants in Nebraska that have home-cooked meals.

Most of the times, a person does not need to have snow chains when driving in the Upper Midwest. Most of the times when it snows, the plows clear of the main roads well and they generally are snow free within a day or two, but the side roads take a little longer. If you-take it easy on the snow and ice and does not turn suddenly and brake suddenly, you should not have too many problems. The ones who generally have problems are those who drive 60-70 mph on snowpacked, ice-covered, or slick roads. Common sense and being aware of the road conditions help with keeping your problems with the winter conditions to a minimum.

Best of luck to you on your visit to Nebraska. There are many good people and great eating places.
