In terms of climate Rhode Island is much milder compared with Nebraska.

The USDA plant hardiness map proves it.

National Arboretum - USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map

Most of eastern Nebraska is about 3 zones colder compared to Rhode Island.

RI is not particularly overcrowded or fast paced.
It has 60% our entire state's population stuffed into an area smaller than most Nebraska counties I've lived in.
That's pretty "crowded" in my book!

I have lived in Nebraska all my life. I spent about 4 weeks in Rhode Island when my company sent me there for a project. Here is my take on the differences.

BAD THINGS ABOUT RHODE ISLAND
Rhode Island is over crowded.
The traffic is really bad.
Prices for everything is high compared to Nebraska.
Crime is much higher in Rhode Island.
There is no such thing as rural Rhode Island.
It's tough to find parking.

GOOD THINGS ABOUT RHODE ISLAND
If you have a boat, its better then Nebraska.
NewPort

Would I move to Rhode Island from Nebraska? NO!

Of course, RI is "more crowded than Nebraska". Nebraska is much bigger and much more spread out. Crime is NOT higher in RI than Nebraska by any crime index.

RI is 40% rural.

"It's tough to find parking". ha ha

Prices are higher- true- but prices follow desirability.

Comparing RI to Nebraska is truly apples and oranges. Nebraska is about the last state I'd ever try to compare RI to. The cultural differences (and opportunities) are vast as is the geography.

Would I ever live in Nebraska- absolutely not!

Here's what I like about Nebraska.

Wide open spaces
The county I live in has 19,000 people and is larger than Rhode Island.
I can leave my keys in the car and the house unhocked and never think twice about it.
Because Nebraska is a less desirable location, houses and land are cheap.
Nebraska is 99% rural.
Cell phones don't work in half of the state.
There is more mileage of hard surface roads per person in Nebraska then any other state.
No rush hours.
4% unemployment
No smog.
I can look out of the windows of my house in any direction and not see a another house.
Only about 10 cars drive past my house a day.
I can hear the freight trains from 20 miles away.
The last time I was in western Nebraska, I drove for 3 hours without seeing another car.
When the county said that they were going to raise my property tax on my house, I called him and asked him not to and he didn't.
I know all the sheriffs deputys,
I know some of the Nebraska State patrol officers.
Oh hell, I know almost everybody in county government and most of them know me.
Everybody here has firearms.
Nebraska has no budget problems.

I'm very glad that the majority of people would not want to live here, thats sound great to me.

I'm happy you're happy. Some people really love isolation and I totally understand that!

I'd pick Nebraska anyday. Rhode Island might have an ocean and be named the Ocean state, but Its a damn cold ocean most of the year, not to mention I'd hate to pay that kind of cost of living.
