No not at all. I think what she said is very commom among out state Nebraskan's as well as some here in Omaha. She just seemed to espouse a "keep out" sort of attitude.

Why? It's a geographical reference.

No I live in Nebraska.. you live in Nebraska... I do not live out state Nebraska.
When you say "out state Nebraska " I feel like you think you are better than the western part of the state, that anything past Omaha/Lincoln does not qualify as being
"Nebraska".

I have to laugh...NE's problem isn't in keeping people from moving there but rather in keeping people from moving out. It's had basically the same population for the last 80 years. Doesn't that tell you something? Don't get me wrong. I like NE, especially the western part of the state, which is very much under-appreciated even by eastern Nebraskans. And I really admire the fact that Nebraskans had to plant most of the trees by themselves. Flying in you sense the order and beauty in the way they planted. It's really special, to me anyway. We've thought of retiring there, especially to the Scottsbluff area, where I had two uncles and where my dad used to spend his summers pulling sugar beets when he was a kid. But let's not get carried away in our praise for the state. The fact remains that far more Huskers have moved out than have moved in. Maybe they'd like to tell us why.

Hmmm... maybe I should have brought up that Nebraskans have a marvelous sense of humor, and even mischief, too?
Shrug. All I have to reiterate is that Nebraskans are EDUCATED, and have a great deal of COMMON SENSE. Some folks are techy and see bitter when they choose - and, conversely, some people 'get it'. Some people understand winks and grins, and some don't. Some people understand TIC, and some don't. Not much anyone can do about that. I'm glad Traveler - whom I was talking to - ahem - 'got it'. But I figured from his previous posts that he would... as would my recent friends on here...
And I'm trying to like the Huskers, even tho I am an NFL baby...
Lighten up. Nebraska is too laid back not to be cheerful about. Stress ain't healthy; and neither is misdrected anger. Kinda like a shotgun, if you fire off anger indiscriminately and too far away, you don't do anything but waste it. Why bother?
And I am WAY west of York County! )

As far as the "out state" term, lets just say its one of those words with two meanings. It can be used as a geographical term, just as upstate New York for example, but I have also seen it used as a derogitory term. As in that place west of Lincoln that nobody cares about, classic east vs. west divide. So I see where Lisa can be offended. It is kind of like when people say Nebraska is flat. Flat isn't meant to be a bad word, but many people use that as a negative description for Nebraska.
I also wanted to say Stan is right, the only place that could be worried about an influx of people is the metro areas and possibly smaller cities like Kearney. Otherwise Nebraska really needs to work on this brain drain problem. Lots of towns are really hurting and if it wasn't for hispanic influx into the state, they could be hurting more. We spend all this money educating our best and brightest and if we can't keep them in Lincoln or Omaha we then send them off to other places. Ever wonder why we have such a Husker nation? Some examples:
My class at Kearney High was 320, kinda small for the school, but of the people I knew most went to school somewhere in Nebraska. Now, very few remain in Kearney or the area. Quite a few are in Lincoln or Omaha, there are also many that have left the state. Colorado's Front Range, Kansas City and Dallas seem to be popular locations. Now this is from Kearney, the fifth largest city in the state, its even tougher for smaller towns to keep kids.
I've known several people who graduate from the Industrial Distrubtion program from UNK. This is a highley regarded program! One graduate got a job in Columbus, the others are in Grand Junction, Co., two in St Joesph, MO, and Minneapolis. My brother in law will be graduating in 2 years and he is talking about jobs out of state.
We have family friends who have a pretty successful farming operation. They have two children. Their son, after ag school at UNL, will come back to take over the farm, which is terrific. Their daughter is going places, she is currently interning in China with a US agency. She was one of 20 people from all over the country to intern across the world. Very few of us expect her to stay in Nebraska because of the lack of opportunities for her. So keep one, lose one that seems to be a best case scenario.
Things like the Yahoo data center in LaVista are great and Lincoln and Omaha need to continue to get those kinds of jobs. At least then we keep people in the state. However we need to also find ways to bring jobs to places outside of Lincoln and Omaha to continue to keep our youth in state.
