Are you moving from LA to NE ?

My entire close and extended family is still in the Baton Rouge area. I am the only one that has left the state.

I do miss it and am thrilled to be going back for a week long visit next week.
I haven't lived in LA for almost 10 years now. Hubby's in the Navy. Like you I am the only one in the entire family (and if you're from LA you know that means 5th cousins too) who's left and not gone back. We're moving from upstate NY to NE. Should be interesting.

DTO,

So, how much time have you actually spent outside of Omaha and Lincoln? There are self righteous people everywhere. Your opinion is no less stereotypical than what you preach against.

Most of Nebraskans I know are very open to others. Furthermore, I have lived in Omaha, Lincoln, and small town rural Nebraska. I am a fiscal conservative, but I am very socially liberal. I just have never witnessed the "snobbish" attitudes with which you speak. It may be that you carry a chip on your shoulders when around non-Omaha and Linocoln Nebraskans and they can sense your "superiority." I would have to say I've probably witnessed that behavior more than the behavior you're describing...although both are pretty limited.

And to "jeepjeep", you're not helping rural Nebraska's cause by making comments like "a liberal out of his element." That's just ridiculous.

Thanks for claryfing that you are talking Legal immigrants. With that qualification I think most of the state is accepting. You will find pockets and some towns that won't be, but I think in general its not a major issue, especially in the more metro areas.

The area I live (Papillion) has a fairly high military influence because of the military base nearby (Bellevue). The military tends to be the most progressive when accepting foreign legal individuals and that influence carries over into the civilian community.

I am a fiscal conservative and a social liberal. Basically, "Do whatever you and another consenting adult want, keep your hands off of my knees, and don't make me pay for whatever it is you want!"

Nebraska sounds pretty much the same way... .

We are Navy too. My husband is at the War College in Newport, RI. We have been everywhere but the midwest so this will be quite a change..

I know exactly what you mean about 5th generation. My Uncles all went to XYZ High School and married girls from XYZ High School. Their kids have since graduated XYZ and married people from that same school. hey all live within about 3 miles of each other. Thats a bit close for me.

I am liberal about VERY FEW things. Plus I live Downtown so I'd hardly be out of my element.

More than you would think. I have lived in Nebraska City twice, and lived in the middle of Nebraska on a ranch near Hastings. All of my family on one side lives in small town and middle of no where Nebraska.

I don't doubt that most Nebraskan's are kind and nice people, as long as you're not different from them. This isn't something I've just heard about, but something I've seen and felt first hand over the years. Heck, even if you don't like the football team (which I hate) people will shun you. Honest to goodness.

I just don't buy it. I am much different than many of those in small towns and disagree with many of the "stereotypical" small town stances, but I have never felt "shunned." I also know all sorts of people who also "hate the Huskers" and they are not shunned in small towns. They may receive some playful ribbing, but so would someone who disliked Creighton Basketball if they professed it in Omaha.

I'm not saying there aren't jerks out there, but that isn't unique to small town life.

Everyone here thinks their **** doesn't stink just because they were lucky enough to be from Nebraska. They don't like change and are BEYOND socially conservative. Especially away from the cities I find more people to be heavy drinkers even before legal age because they have nothing better to do.

Nebraskans will accept you if you're a white, christian, conservative. Like I said this doesn't hold true for Lincoln or Omaha areas because they are used to being around people different from themselves.
Okay, I'm showing my stupidity or naiveness (is that a word?).

I sincerely thought my experience in Nebraska (it's on the worst towns thread) was like "Out there" and really out of the ordinary. While we lived there we traveled to other places and were greeted with kindness... then again living in a place is a different thing.
