BTW, the minimum wage has to be higher in WA due to the insanely high cost of living. |

It also looks as though capital letters, complete sentences, and punctuation marks aren't required in Washington.
Minimum wage is $8.07 huh? What's the cost of living? |

Ok lets see what this "redneck state" is like 1) Omaha was ranked the 8th best city to work by Forbes 2) we have the number one zoo in the country in omaha 3) Omaha's economy is booming not shrinking 4) some people like the sun 5)we have creighton university to be proud of too, we have 3 national research hospitals in omaha to be proud of we have 5 fortune 500 companies to be proud of we have warren buffet to be proud of we have the most unique capitol building to be proud of we have some of the friendliest people in the nation to be proud of. 6) we have the tallest building between tulsa minneapolis and chicago and denver. taller than the space needle. 7) we have the only Unicameral in the nation. the nebraska state government is the most effective of all state governments. 8) we have some of the highest standards nation wide for education. 9) and oh ya we are proud of our football team and we sort of like LSU now too |

I agree with you about the zoo and Creighton: both in Omaha. And Nebraska may have high standards, it's also almost at the bottom of the heap for pay for teachers. And the unicameral system, which you point out is the only one in the country, lets politicians claim non-partisanship. There's a REASON it's the only one in the country! lol I HATE the term "redneck," but I'm kind of defending the guy that said that. I don't think he meant Omaha, but I think you did. And I think we all agree Omaha is a fantastic city! BUT ignoring "non-Omaha" is a HUGE problem for the state (out migration, etc.). And I did not know that that building was taller than the space needle. 'Ya learn something new every day. Very cool. |

LOL I know you're jumping to defend the honor of our state. I would not call this a redneck state either. But perfect, no such state exists. R/E the Unicameral- very innovative, and I always used to think the idea was a model other states should follow. Although non-partisan I just read an article on candidates for office this year and the reporter made it a point to mention each candidate's political party registration. Part time sessions, done in many states. Problem with the sessions and pay- 'Average Joe', whom I would prefer for representation cannot leave a full time job for civic duty for 2-3 months a year. That leaves business owners, ranchers, retired, and worse yet- 'sponsored' with an agenda. (Lawyers, Business executives, government employees such as teachers, etc) Some laws have been passed regardless of public opinion in regards to taxes, eliminating small school districts, attempted splits/consolidation of schools, city annexation, etc etc. But our housing costs are cheap, cannot credit legislation for that. Taxes- Our taxes are higher than most other states. More focus has been on improving/adding services, buildings, and finding more sources for taxes. 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 .... debate/response will follow very soon! If a government was perfect, there would be little need for a legislature. |

While we are no utopia in outstate Nebraska (otherwise we would have quite the population) we are proud, which is why some become so defensive when looked down upon. Call us rednecks if you want, farmers and ranchers necks are red from the hard work out in the sun to put food on the table for many, this is our biggest business. It may not be sexy or be on any fortune 500 list, but is vitally important and someone has to do it. We have other business' too Chief out of Grand Island, the Buckle is based in Kearney, Cabela's in Sidney, UP has a large presence in North Platte, BNSF is large in Alliance and others. Our schools are very good, the teacher pay is low, but so is cost of living. While most see outstate Nebraska as flat plain, we have good scenery with the Sandhills, Pine Ridge, lakes and canyons. We have low crime rates and people tend to take care of each other. My grandmother is almost 90 and has macular degeneration. Yet she still lives alone on a small ranch in the Sandhills. While my family will go get her for appointments and things, we really our her neighbors to help her most days and her neighbors wouldn't have it any other way. She has a long driveway and the mailman will personally bring mail to her door, to check on her and visit awhile. The county maintainer always takes care of her driveway, doesn't have too but does because he know she can't do it. When my grandfather passed, we didn't have to cook for weeks because of all the food people would bring over. It is not for all, you won't find mountains, oceans or big city excitment. Alot of young people leave and we are losing population, that is a fact. It is not the most exciting place in the world. However, it is a special place in its own right and deserves to be defended.

Any state that has a large rural area could be considered a redneck state. Most of the state of New York is just as rural and filled with rednecks as Nebraska.

I find rural Nebraska people to be quite helpful, reserved, conservative, and willing to help out if you have car trouble.
