Question Officially moving to Auburn

After much consideration, we have finally decided to accept a job near Auburn. We had considered a position near Blair, but Auburn made a better offer. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone here could offer me some practical living in Auburn advice such as:

Where do people shop?

Are there opportunities for kids to get involved, like baseball, football, soccer, etc.?

How are the schools?

What do people do for fun?

Are the people there friendly and accepting of newcomers?

Any good restaurants?

Good doctors/dentists?

What about the churches there?

Just a little info about us. Husband and I are late 20's/early 30's. We have three kids age 7, almost 5, and 9 months. We want to move to a small town for the atmosphere, slow pace, sense of community, good values. Anny info would really be appreciated. Thanks guys!
Wendi

I feel sorry for you. Auburn is terrible. I have family there and visit often and it's no wonder Auburn is the fastest shrinking town in Nebraska.

Where do people shop?
Nebraska City. Lincoln or Omaha. There are grocery stores and a few other places but most major shopping is well away from Auburn.

Are there opportunities for kids to get involved, like baseball, football, soccer, etc.?
Actually Auburn does well here. My cousin were/are involved with many community sports leagues. I guess that's about the only plus I can think of.

How are the schools?
I've never heard anything good or bad. I guess since there aren't as many schools to choose from they don't really compete.

What do people do for fun?
Not much. Drugs and drinking come to mind. I say that in all honesty. I've never seen a place with so many addicts. Once again most of the stuff people in other places take for granted isn't in Auburn.

Are the people there friendly and accepting of newcomers?
Unless you're a minority, then yes.

Any good restaurants?
No.

Good doctors/dentists?
Don't know.

What about the churches there?
Don't know.

Default The Great Unknown

Since I've never been to Auburn, I really can't comment much except to provide Auburn's Web Site and give you a new Nebraska residents take on the state.

We bought rural property in western Nebraska and couldn't be happier. The people here are some of the best we've met anywhere, and while you certainly will be giving up some shopping convenience, you will get used to doing some things differently to accomodate your new location.

People in rural Nebraska are really into school sports, and the nightly TV sports report cover statewide high school like noplace we've seen before. You won't find much traffic, and if you enjoy the outdoors, there is a lot to do in Nebraska.

You might want to check out the Nebraska tourism web site for tips on things to do too. You can read about our search, discovery, move, and indoctrination into Nebraska on my blog at the McCook Gazette. If you want the whole story, you should check the archives and start at the beginning. There are around 90 or so blog entries so far since last November.

If you and your family enjoy living in Nebraska 1/2 as much as my wife and I do, you won't regret your move! Good luck!

Here is a thread on Auburn:
http://www.city-data.com/forum/omaha...burn-area.html

For shopping, you can find most things probably in Auburn, there are grocery, Pamida and Dollar General. Closest Wal-mart is Nebraska City. You will probably make trips to Lincoln, Omaha, St. Joe or K.C. for major shopping.

I take it he will be working at Brownville, we would love to keep you in Nebraska, but you might also check out Rockport, Mo. It is just across the river from Brownville. My only experience with it is driving through, but you might find some tax relief on that side of the river, but it is also a little smaller than Auburn.

I read that thread and the only thing it told me was that there may or may not be a drug problem in Auburn and people may or may not be snobby. I thought I'd ask again and maybe get different perspectives.

Yes, hubby will be working at Brownville. I just can't see myself living in Missouri. Too close to Arkansas.

As far as shopping, what is Pamida? I have a friend who grew up in rural SD and always spoke of Pamida. Is it like a mini Wal-Mart? I don't mind giving up shopping. I'd save so much money! Thanks for the reply!

Pamida is headquartered in Omaha (but Omaha doesn't have a store)... there are about 120-130 of them around the midwest. Generally found in the smaller towns and serves as a general mercantile. Good reputation - been around since the early 50's I think.

MarriedWithOutChildren is on a distinguished road
Default Auburn

Hello, and welcome to Nebraska.

I was born and raised in Auburn, currently living in Omaha.

Pamida is a small discount store, a lot smaller, but similar to a Walmart. You can get your basic necessities from Pamida. Auburn also has a couple of craft/mom & pop shops on the square, aka, the blocks surrounding the courthouse.

Small town doctors/dentists, very friendly. In fact, the doctor and dentist that I had while growing up own the local (only) movie theatre. They try their best to get good movies in and keep it in good condition.

The Wheeler in was owned by the same family for a very long time, however, they recently sold it to a younger couple. They used to have good steaks, burgers, etc, but havn't been since new ownership. Arbor Manor is also a steak house, usually good steaks, etc.

Auburn does have a lot to offer as far as your children being involved in sports, church, and other community events. The Auburn Bulldogs (high school) football just won state last year. One elementary school K-4th, 1 jr high 5th & 6th, and 1 high school 7th - 12th, so most of the kids grow from kindergarten to sr year together. Of course this has it's ups and downs.

Auburn has several churches. I was raised Catholic, went to Christian churches with friends sometimes, all very small and offer a sense of togetherness. This will be a great way to meet people and introduce your family to the community.

Not having children, I couldn't stand Auburn. Of course, this is after having lived there off and on for 27 years. If you like to enjoy other cultures or diversity as far as food, people, events, etc., Auburn will not be for you. But as you stated, you are looking for a slower pace of living, a sense of community, etc. You should not have any problems meeting people in Auburn through church, school, etc.

Not sure why all the etc.'s, just went with it!

Keep in mind, that Auburn, just like many other small towns does have it's fair use of drugs. Once you meet people and make friends, you will learn the family names of the 'druggies', 'losers', and those not to associate with. Auburn can be very cliquish, but if that's your thing you'll fit right in.

I hope you enjoy Auburn. And again, Welcome to Nebraska!! You'll have to keep us posted on how things go for you and your family.

Thank you so much! This is the info I was looking for. I've read everything on the Auburn web page and just wanted an insider's point of view. I'm sure there are drugs in Auburn. Every town has some sort of drug element. I'm sure people will be more than willing to let us know all about the drug use of our neighbors. Thanks again!

Just wanted to update this thread. We went out to Nebraska this past week to look for a house. I loved, loved, loved it! The area around Auburn is beautiful. Whoever said Nebraska was flat never visited that area. Yes, the pace is slower, (I'll have to get over the NY syndrome of driving as fast as possible) but that's a good thing. I saw people out walking around town, and they didn't look like they were going to rob someone. I felt so relaxed there, like no one was judging my every move, though I'm sure they were staring wondering who the heck we were. I'm pretty sure I could tell you about half the people in the county since my real estate agent told us about everyone. I'm sure I'll love the town of Brownville as I'm a book nerd. And Runza's alone made me want to move as soon as possible. Yummy!!! The best part is that we found a house. Its everything we wanted. A nice big old farmhouse in immaculate condition on 8.25 acres on a mostly gravel road 1.75 miles off the highway!! The only down side is apparently you cannot legally shot animals, such as deer and turkeys, that wonder onto you land out of season. I thought maybe I could claim self defense, but I guess that's frowned upon. So, I pretty much loved everything about Nebraska and Auburn. Only 1 more month to go before I'm there to stay.
