I get the impression that people in eastern Nebraska are not big on gardening. And I don't see much in the way of small family orchards. What are the prospects for vegetable gardens and fruit trees in the area? Is it just a hostile climate?

Fruit trees can be tough because the winter and early spring weather is so unpredictable - late frosts can blast the buds. But I have some friends who have successfully grown hardy peaches and sour cherries as well as apples and plums. Other fruits and vegetables do fine (provided they're not hit by a bad hailstorm, which can happen on rare occasions). Back when I had a big garden, I had bumper crops of tomatoes, peppers, cantaloupes (they love our summer heat!), carrots and parsnips, Swiss chard and other greens, and cucumbers. Squashes were a bit tricky because of squash bugs and squash vine borers, but I usually had decent yields through early August, when the plants would finally give up the ghost. And I had trouble with beans because of cucumber beetles.

Thank you, Aredhel. Good info all around. Glad to know it isn't as bleak as I suspected!
