LOL We've got a girl from Massachusetts here jeepjeep - she married a rancher over 20 years ago and she and her family back east commute back and forth regularly. Like us, her family and friends didn't understand the lure, but she is very happy and involved, and they enjoy themselves when they come out. It isn't just the hunting and fishing and disparate views and countryside - it is the peacefulness of the people, the honesty, integrity, and just plain friendliness of the folks here.
These are just a sampling of the quilts in the fair competition:
These people believe in heritage and history - and a sense of humor!
If you want or have children, the educational values are second to none; the kids all take their hats off and put their hands over their hearts when the flag passes by. They have drama club before school and sports practice afterwards - and 'complain' when they get out of school because they have to go load cows or ride a fence line after school! There's no time to get into trouble in the country - there's work to do and they all do it. The kids are centered and involved here and know what is important. Parents make popcorn balls for Halloween and no one xrays their candy. There is something going on every week - either at the school, at the community center or fire station, or in a nearby town. We have everything from karaoke to town picnics (where everyone brings something) in our town of less than 200 people. It is idyllic, a throwback, call it whatever you want - but these folks know who they are and what is important in life.
Miss Ida is my new hero - at 63 she still smokes, is tough as nails, works a 16 hour day at the ranch, and competes in tractor pulls:
It isn't just the scenery, but the people who make it worthwhile.
"Most people will cling to a familiar old pain rather than seek out an unfamiliar pleasure." It takes a lot of courage to decide what you want, seek it out, and go get it, leaving behind all of your (and other peoples') "can'ts" and "shouldn'ts". I hope you find that courage.
