What about Keya Paha county? We've found a possible real estate prospect there and it's not too far from Valentine. Anybody know anything about it?

Very small county in terms of population, under a 1000 for the whole county, county seat is Springview, under 400 population. If its not too far from Valentine, then you would obiviously commute their for jobs and services, but school I guessing will be in Springview, unless you can opt to Valentine.

I would find a job first before even considering housing...

Sorry - just made me giggle. Not that there is a single thing wrong with Springview, I have cousins there, and have had some very nice times there. But if you are thinking mechanic, you better think of a little bigger town. I giggle again, because my cousin is a mechanic. And I don't think he has a full time job there, though, I must admit, I haven't talked to him for a couple of years. He may have even moved by now??
But seriously, have you thought about North Platte? Or are you looking for a small town? Springview would be a great place to raise kids, but you would be driving so far for neccessities. And the price of gas?? Or perhaps maybe you should think just across the state line into Winner, SD. That is a little bigger, and it is a nice town. And there is no state income tax in S. Dakota. Might make it a better idea? I don't want a bunch of hate mail from Springview, as I said, I love the town! I really do - I just don't think you are going to make enough to support yourself . But I do hope you make out well - wherever you go!Good luck and be sure to post where you end up. I hope you do a land office business. Good mechanics are needed every where. |

How do you think folks who live in really small towns live, then? |

I think she just meant that there might not be alot of business for a mechanic in Springview, if there is already a part-time one there.

I may be a bit partial but the best advertising is word of mouth. I live in Valentine. I would like to direct you to the following web sites. The first one is new this week so there may not be complete information but it is going up quickly. There are several mechanic shops in Valentine. A large auto dealership, farm implement dealers, etc. We also have new property being listed every week. You do desire what many desire. Just outside of the city limits with a little acreage.

Than you tpabes, for coming to my rescue. I guess I should have made myself a little more clear. I know every area needs services of all kinds. And you are absolutely right, I didn't mean that he wasn't needed in Springview - or any other area for that matter. I just didnt want In The Middle to go there, and find out there wasn't enough business to support him and his family, buy property, and then find out he would have to pull up stakes because he just wasn't able to make enough money to live on.
I guess I should be much more conservative on what I say and how I say it. I never was very good at being politically correct. And for that I apologize to everyone. I just meant he should check it out to make sure that there would be enough business. And as someone else already said, a back ground in working on farm machinery would be very helpful. If he can work on Diesel Tractors and the like as well as just cars and trucks, I imagine there would be enough business. I didn't mean to imply that good mechanics weren't needed there. Heaven's - we could use a good mechanic where I live, and this is a much bigger town. And as I said, I hope he is prosperous where ever he chooses! And I apologize to you, Fred, I know how hard it is to live in small towns, and not having the luxury of all kinds of services that you can find in a bigger city, but stll have the luxury of the small town atmosphere. I didn't mean to offend anyone. I apologize! |
