Here is a link to a good starting place of decent public places to fish. For eastern Nebraska start on page 31. Fishing Across Nebraska

For just a quick impromptu fishing outing of a few hours pop over to Walnut Creek in Papillion - just a short jaunt from South O. It is mentioned on page 33. From South O, take Kennedy Freeway (Highway 73/75) south towards Bellevue; at Highway 370 go right (west) towards Papillion; at 96th street turn left (south) and about 1/4 mile you see the eastern entrance to Walnut... if you have a boat then go on around to the western entrance for the ramp.

Here is a list of lakes in Southeast Nebraska (includes Douglas and Sarpy counties) that have been stocked by the Nebr Game & Parks Commission so far this year.

Nebr Game & Parks Commission map - Northeast Nebr and Southeast Nebr

If you know what you are doing you can also fish the Missouri River also lots and lots of private farm ponds that have good fishing.

Well imagine this...I am going to throw out some of my favorite places across Northern Nebraska since you said driving was not out of question.

Ponca State Park I would say its about 100 miles out of Omaha. Very nice place, things to do, nice cabins or spots for camping. Biking, hiking, nice views of the Missouri River.

On west you have Lewis & Clark Lake with endless outdoors activities.

West farther you will find Niobrara State Park Here again, very nice. Horse back riding, hiking, scenic overlook. And if do some checking back to the east about 20 miles you may be able to catch a nice Pow Wow ceremony on The Sante Reservation some evening. There is also a very nice elk ranch just south of Niobrara Park area with some nice tours.

Those are a couple just in close to you. Now if you are wanting to get into the sandhills area, your options are endless!

Default Outdoor Recreation Resources

You have gotten a wealth of information about places to go so far, and while I won't add specific recomendations, I thought I'd pass along some links to Nebraska outdoor recreation web information for you to research for yourself...

National Park Guide provided information about National Park Service administered areas in Nebraska.

USDA Forest Service, Nebraska & Samuel R. McKelvie National Forests, Buffalo Gap, Fort Pierre, & Oglala National Grasslands - Home - The USDA Forest Service has hand planted national forest lands open to recreation.

USACE - Army Corps of Engineers has numerous water related recreation areas in Nebraska... Corps Lakes Gateway: Nebraska.

USFWS - US Fish & Wildlife Service has fishing, hunting, and wildlife viewing available Nebraska National Wildlife Refuges, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

You can spend days looking for things to do at the Nebraska tourism web site... Visit Nebraska - Travel & Tourism Homepage.

Speaking of wildlife, don't forget Nebraska Game and Parks... Nebraska Game and Parks Commission - Wildlife Management Areas. Wildlife areas are not just for hunting and fishing during season, and perhaps the states most under utilized recreation areas.

County fairs, town festivals, wineries, history and much more. On a personal note...I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Pioneer Village in Minden.

Enjoy Nebraska!

Thank You Off Pavement
Last night while watching TV, there was an ad for the Nebraska travel guide. I told DH I ought to request a copy. As much as I search the web for other questions I never even thought to check for any states attractions.
Thanks a bunch Appreciate your input.

pioneer village in Minden is pretty "nebraska - like" and very interesting (I like the 'dog-powered' washing machine)

camp or stay in the motel for reduced entry fee.
Windmill State Wayside is nice at the I-80 exit near there (~ 3-4 hrs west)
