Question Help... Relocation to North Platte

Hello,

First I would like to say thank you to anyone who takes the time to give my family and I some advise.

My husband is taking a job in North Platte, we are moving from Raleigh NC actually Apex, but Raleigh is more known.

I have two boys 7 and 13

In looking to relocate I am hoping to find a community which is close or within a 30 min drive to my husbands work.
Main priority is schools for my two sons and I am a full time student going towards a Associates with a half year to go and will transfer to a University for BA in nursing.
I would love to find a planned community with a ymca, library, and other recreational activites, and schools close to home. Love trees and mature landscape.
Is there such a place out there?
Love to hear from you all.

Kelly

First word of warning is your going to see a lot less trees in Nebraska, in cities you will find plenty of them, but out in the country you will find less due to all the ranchland and farmland. I would personally just stay in North Platte for all you want. It's a big city for Nebraska, but coming from Raleigh area its going to be small. It has around 25,000 people and would have your YMCA, library and good schools. You can get everywhere in town, in probably 15 minutes or less. There is a lake south of town and some neat parks for some recreational activites. There is a community college in town called Mid-Plains Commmunity College, however the closest University is in Kearney, and 1.5 hr drive east, and I believe they don't have a nursing degree. So you might have to look into going online.
If you want a smaller town, look into Gothenburg which is about 30 minutes east and is a town of 3,000. Any ?'s just ask.

My family is also moving to North Platte area. My husband works there now, but myself and our boys still live in NY. We will move this June.
We are having a similar dilemma. We have two young boys, and would like to be close to activities, etc... yet would like a smaller community and school in which to reside.

We have looked into Sutherland and Gothenburg, which are smaller communities close to NP. Gothenburg is about 50 mi to the East; Sutherland about 20 mi to the West.
Sutherland is very small, but we have gotten some good information about the schools. Though quite small, they seem to be good an I think it would be a nice place for young kids- safe. We would end up doing all shopping and activities in North Platte- there really is nothing other than homes and small businesses in Sutherland.
Gothenburg is a bit more self-sufficient- It is larger than Sutherland by quite a bit. I have not yet been able to get to much info about Gothenburg, and it is a little too far away from NP for our needs. But it looks to be a nice community form what I have read and learned.

I know, from spending time in Nebraska, there are not many trees.
Like TP said, I do think for your schooling and desire for activity centers NP itself may be the best choice for you. Though Hershey and Sutherland are not far (about 10-15 min drive from Hershey to NP, about 20-30 min drive from Sutherland to NP) they are very small and might not appeal to your needs.
That's all the help I can give you, really. Good luck with your move... I hope you will be happy in NE

I grew up in Hershey. The school there always had a great reputation and actually pulled in more students from the surrounding areas than Sutherland's school. That was a good 15 years ago though.

These towns sprang up long ago and have neighborhoods with mature trees. Still seems like a drastic change from the Raleigh area though.

Have you visited Nebraska and saw it's landscape? It is a lot different than back east. My wife, who is from Upstate NY in the Adirondack mountains, thinks Nebraska looks like the face of the moon.
