I live in MI so most people in MI root for Detroit teams, the exceptions being the Upper Peninsula (lightly populated, but most Yoopers root for Green Bay in football) and Berrien County, where most people root for Chicago teams. In all fairness the UP is more connected economically and culturally with WI and Berrien County is basically an extension of Chicagoland.

My curiosity has always been what the people who live in states without sports teams do. Obviously anybody can root for any team but I refer to what people are mostly fans of. I imagine college football is bigger in Nebraska, but we are talking major leagues.

I'm guessing Kansas City teams would be most popular, followed by Chicago and Minneapolis.

pro/major league are a distant second to college.

Maybe back east they care about KC/MN teams, but out here, it's Denver. But that's only if Nebraska isn't playing something at the same time.

As far as pro teams, it is fairly regional. Lots of Chiefs/Royals fans in the east and Broncos/Rockies fans in the west. Plus Avalanche fans in the west. (Yes, there are hockey fans in Nebraska!)

Speaking of hockey, there are those of use who also enjoy Nebraska's three USHL teams (Lancers, Stars, and Storm) and the NCAA team (UNO).

Many years ago I worked at the TV station in Hastings (central part of the state), back when NBC carried AFC football. It was always NBC's call regarding which team was shown in our market on Sunday, Broncos or Chiefs. We could count on angry calls every Sunday because no matter what NBC decided, they angered about half the viewers in that market, and they all blame the local affiliate. We always enjoyed Sundays when the Broncos played the Chiefs as we could take a day off from complaint calls.

But of course, Husker football is the state's number one fan base.

Stopped caring about the Huskers and college football several years ago. Now, I only watch it if I'm really bored, there is nothing else on TV, or I'm scouting pro prospects. NFL > NCAA

When I lived in Omaha, it was pretty solid Broncos territory. Of course this was during the period of 1995-2002 when the Broncos were a back to back Super Bowl powerhouse and the Chiefs were not doing good. I imagine the bandwagon effect had something to do with this.

I would add Green Bay to your list. Also, it seems to me that KC and Minneapolis have a bigger following here than Chicago has.

That's just weird to me. When I was there, we didn't have many Viking and Packer fans there, and both teams were pretty strong at the time.

My "data" about this is not very strong. It is an impression based on a rather small sample size of colleagues and stopping by sports bars on Monday nights.

If you have the Huskers, you don't NEED another team....

And yes, my family bleeds scarlet and crimson.

I used to worship John Elway and the Broncos in the 1990s. I remember being the only kid on the playground who liked them, because at that time you either worshiped Elway or Favre (if you were a boy between 6-13) and most at my school liked the Packers. (Lions were a joke with the exception of Barry Sanders). I remember rubbing it in their faces Super Bowl of '98. The thing is the Packers have always had a following in MI since the Lions were historically so dismal, and they are the "home team" in Northern MI. But in the 90s both teams had a real national following. Packers still do to some extent, but the Broncos have worn off. I still have a special place for them because they are the first sports team I ever cared about.
