Joan Thomson, SRES is on a distinguished road
The bridge over Missouri at Yankton on 81 now has a weight limit. If you are not in an 18 wheeler you should be ok. If you are driving a car you can always take 52 West from Yankton and then drive over the Gavins Point Dam. That is what I have decided to do during the construction time. I rather watch the lake and river than the car infront while waiting our turn through the construction.
If you totally want to avoid the Stop and Wait in the construction zone over the River, and did not mind the slower view route.
You can take the road over the river just west of Vermillion, or take 57 South from SD over the new bridge to join 14 and 12 and go that way.

It just depends if you do not like to sit and wait for construction zones in the day time, drive at night or go around. Or, just take a deep breath and take 81 as usual.
