Well Econ, some people have a chip on their shoulder and don't realize it.
I have a chip on my shoulder, and that is when data is twisted and my favorite city is very well misrepresented.. Omaha has been consistantly placed as one of the best cities in america for several reasons, the only reasons I can think of to not like the city are just a few... One is no Top professional teams for 180 miles from here, also has about 1-2 months of uncomfortable winter temperatures, (for the drinkers) last call at 1am (unless you go to Council Bluffs then it is 2 am), and the city-wide public smoking ban. I was driving through the Eastern side of Omaha (east of 42nd street) for a few hours the other day, and I don't know what Mattden is talking about, there are alot of new construction, rebuilding and nice neibhorhoods in east Omaha, I was actually out 'looking' for bad neighboorhoods, and really could not find an area that was consistantly bad, now I may have missed an area and will admit there were a few areas that had ugly, trashy homes lined up next to each other in a set of 2-4 houses, but that was uncommon. I think Omaha really has cleaned up and still is rebuilding and rediscovering itself... There are many homes and townhouses and condos east of 72nd that are very nice and alot of rebuilding and There are probably more $1,000,000 dollar homes east of 72nd than west... The retail stores are also fixed up and rebuilt from ten years ago (many of them anyway)... I think that East Omaha is fine, you don't have to live in a suburb to be 'sure' you're living in a nice area... |

Hasn't attacked anyone personally?? He's attacked the whole central and western side of Nebraska with his generalizing. If he wants to say that the ten people he ran into were all rude to him, I can accept that. But to say it about an entire region, give me a break!

I agree with Yac. You guys shouldn't let Matt get you so riled up. He's a kid, he's entitled to his opinion, and this is only the internet. He hates Nebraska, big deal. You are ambassadors for the state, live up to it's reputation by keeping a cool head. |

I moved away from Omaha a year and a half ago, and have not returned. I am from the area and that is my home. Did I want to leave, absolutely not? I lived and worked in Omaha for 10 years. I started out at the bottom at $8.00an hour with a bachelor’s degree, and ended up at 36K per year salary. After working for 36K per year for 6 years and no raise, I decided to leave my position and take a new position with another company. That new company was a joke, and my income drastically decreased, on commission only. After spending 10 months searching for a job, and trying to save my home from foreclosure at the same time, I gave up and moved to Denver. I couldn't even get a job selling copy machines in Omaha. I am a division manager now in Denver and have been with the same company since I moved here a year and a half ago. I was fortunate enough to have sold my home before it went into foreclosure. Needless to say, I gave Omaha everything I could. When it came down to finding a job that paid a living wage, Omaha told me to bend over. I have named Omaha the land of the $10.00/hr jobs, as that is all that seems to be there. People in Omaha have this idea that the city is on the up and up. In reality, there is nothing going on there. Show me any major company that is relocating to Omaha and bringing in any high paying jobs.

UP LandAmerica Insurance PayPal operations an announcement expected for Pac Life in the near future a huge $600,000,000 high tech company soon to announce 200+ jobs in the last 4 years, and there are others also, but I'm not going to dig deep for you, so you can look it up yourself... oh yeah and omaha ranks in the top 10 year in and out for income vs cost of living, 3,500$ above the average income and 12th lowest cost of living in the nation... housing in denver average about 30% of the income made there and 12% for big houses and yards here.... Good luck in Denver and dont look back.... PLEASE!! |

I can personally vouch for Pacific Life moving jobs here from California. WPS, a Fortune 500 company from Madison, WI, is moving here at the end of the month and will be my new employer.
My current employer, Mutual of Omaha, is expanding into banking and will be a major banker in the area. Blue Cross and Blue Shield is having an expansion that will bring hundreds of new jobs to Omaha over the next few years. I happen to know of many insurance companies expanding into Omaha. |
