Jeffco,
Sorry, but just because you had job problems here doesn't mean that's the case with the entire city.
If you check the stats there is no way the "Omaha is the home of the $10/hour job" description fits.

Economics?

I hear McDonalds hires people with Economics degrees. Can you say "You want fries with that"?
But seriously, about all you can do with an Economics degree is teach. And that's only if you get a PhD.
Should have thought about that before you chose your major.

O.k. Did I Get Lucky?
I moved up from Florida to the town of Uehling NE. about two years ago and granted, I started my own business (photography) but I have not hardly skipped a beat for work. These people welcomed me and started using me almost immediately.
Granted there are not a lot of computer jobs in this town of 275 but their seems to be no lack of ambition from the folks here and they all seem to eat pretty regularly and are among some of the most friendly and content people I ever met.
Wish you all a lot of luck looking, but it might not be all the people in Ne. fault.
A rule of thumb to live by is if the world is treating you badly, maybe you should look at how you are treating the world.
We got all dressed up to celebrate the arrival of the first train in Uehling in February 1906. Yea it is COLD !!

No Jobs in Omaha
To ehenningsen,
You listed a ton of companies, great. They all have my resume, from 2005. I mentioned that I spent 10 months looking for a job that paid a living wage. That's my point here, I could not get a job!! You are probably one of those people living in west Omaha, has the decent job, standard house, great. You can talk all you want about Omaha being in the top 10 for job growth. It probably is for Insurance, or agri-business. The fact is, I'm in a technology field. In Denver we have Sun Microsystems, a large aerospace industry, and tons of other software companies. Please explain to me how I was able to send 2 resumes to Denver, and had an offer back in less than a month. That's what I want you to explain. Please keep in mind that I am an executive out here and will state again, that I was unable to get a job selling copy machines in Omaha. That is the fact here. Believe me, I won't be looking back, at Omaha anyway.

Very interesting. I worked in the insurance industry for almost 20 years, until 2001 when I landed a job in a different industry. In fact, the first insurance company I worked for, the home office was located in Omaha.
Regarding Pacific Life moving jobs from California--I wonder if any of the affected California employees will be willing to transfer to Nebraska, especially those who have never lived anywhere else?

All I know is the company I work for here in Omaha is having a hard time finding skilled employees. The pay/benefits/incentives are top of the line. Most of that 3.5% are unemployed by choice. You can actually drive through areas of the city and see people on every corner just chillin drinking some colt-45's.

Also, you have a Master in Economics? Sounds like a good transitional degree into Banking. That is a fast growing industry in the metro area. Several new banks have started up recently, including one by Mutual of Omaha. Indications are all banks are having a hard time finding good qualifed candidates to grow into bankers.
In fact, the Omaha World Herald did an article on the topic this weekend (Sat 11/3/2007).
Get with a career counselor and find out how to break into that industry. Certainly not $10/hour.
