Yeah, someone previously had made the comment that you can't get a job with an economics degree, unless you go on and teach it.

That's just an unbelievably ignorant comment.

Economics degree translates to many many industries, beyond the obvious of banking or insurance.

For a couple of excellent perspectives on how broad an Econ degree is check out:

I would have to say that I totally agree with the last poster, MattDen, I have two degrees, one in International Relations and one in History. I also have experience working four jobs and a great resume/interviewing skills. I am currently stuck in Omaha, and I am waiting to get accepted to a total of 15 graduate schools for Master's programs in International Relations. However, in the meantime I have to find a job. I've been trying to find a good job with my degrees here in Omaha since 2007, and I STILL have not found it. The fact is....unless you are working in banking, insurance, IT or engineering....there aren't many other opportunites in Nebraska for you. I CAN'T WAIT

to move!!! The only jobs available in Omaha right now are primarily customer service, sales, brainless data entry positions, IT or some type of pyramid scheme bull****. My plan was never to stay here, but the fact that I have been stuck here with no opportunity to advance my career is really unfortunate. I would like to warn everyone else who comes here for college (as I did)...be aware that if you get stuck here it can take a while to get out. Also, the state has failed to move into the 21st century and is the most racially tense and segregated city I've ever lived in and been to. That is really saying something b/c I've been all over and lived all over, including other countries. I have a lot more to say about this place, as I was truly not welcomed upon my arrival and was looked at as an outsider. They are not very welcoming to people who move here from other places or states. I mean, the fact that Nebraskans consider themselves better than Iowans and hate Iowa and Council Bluffs (calling it Council Tuckey) is just one perfect example of how ignorant and unaccepting people are of diversity and others here. These two states are essentially the same, yet the people still can't get along. Ridiculous.

Well, MattDen's comment that I was originally agreeing with was that the good jobs go to specific inner social circle people (Creighton grads ah hem)

Hmmm... I've generally had good jobs with career advancement and I'm not a Creighton grad... wonder how that happened?

Independent,

You're completely full of it. First, it is YOUR opinion that you have good interviewing skills. I have a few degrees myself, and would have NO problem whatsoever finding a high level job.

And as far as the jobs being available to an "inner circle" is phenomenally paranoid. My guess you simply are unhappy with your life and instead of looking in the mirror your fragile ego is spared by blaming it on "the man" or the "the system."

The world is what you make of it. Why is it so difficult for you to move?? It would take me about 8 hours to decide to make a move anywhere in the U.S.! Maybe your problem is your are unqualified for the advanced positions you want. You're complaining about not getting advanced, but apparently you're not getting offers in other cities. That would indicate the problem is with YOU!

As far as Omaha, being the most racially intense city...well...I'm not even going to go into. You're clearly hell bent on doing everything you can to trash Omaha. Further, the whole Council "tucky" comment is LIBERAL Omahans saying that Council Bluffs is closed minded and "redneck." I agree its rude, but the point is its Omahans accusing CB of being close minded, which is EXACTLY what you're doing to Omaha. At least your blatantly hypocritical though...I'll give you that.

With posts like this you pretty quickly lose any credibility.

What's even more amazing is how a nine-page thread that hadn't been commented on in nearly two years could be revived!

"Independent thinker" is a troll who has shown up and posted the same exact post several times in several threads. It's not much better than spamming and I think we should report the posts and just ignore him/her.
