Impossible to find a good job!
Nebraska..."The Good Life." For those who can find a decent job! I'm sure it's the same everywhere but I've had recruiters laugh in my face, someone at a temp agency who tried to raise my pay by $0.75/hour if I would keep doing work that was causing me an injury, and the only job I can find is a telemarketing job that I can't stand.
Granted, one of the reasons I'm having a problem is my MA degree (Economics). I drove to Lincoln last month for an interview and the panel of three (retard) interviewers gave me cold stares and acted like jerks. Okay, so I can accept that my personality tends to turn many people off, although some people are intrigued by it...maybe that's a large part of the problem.
But for crying out loud, everyone says Omaha is such a great place to live...it's a bit more friendly than the East or West coast, but it also has its drawbacks. The companies and people who work in them are bureaucratic, stale, and can't accept new ideas. Why would anyone want to live here? econ

Impossible to find a good job!
Well welcome to the good life. It is only good if you know someone in position or have a family member that is a very good friend. Otherwise all that you can do is flip hamburgers.
I have a pre-law degree, 26 years of military service and experience, worked for the US Department of State and the United Nations. Yet I can not even get to the interview part of some good jobs. I was born in Nebraska, went to school in Nebraska and am getting screwed over by Nebraska. Yet I can't afford to leave.
Good luck.

That's rather discouraging to know. My friend in Omaha got his job at a company that makes the computer/electronic components that go inside ATMs because (from what I remember) he knew someone already working there, who in turn was able to pull some strings and let him get hired. If not for that, he'd probably still be working as a delivery driver for DHL!

Ah well, Nebraskans are just narrow minded. I love how Lincoln likes to act like its some corperate power-house when the average wage is 20% below the national average. You have to try to laugh this state of no vision off!
I wouldnt be insulted by Nebraskans lack of vision, they are just provincial people who dont like new ideas whos only interest is college football.

Darn skippy!! Go Big Red!!!! Wow it's interesting to hear this from people obviously not from my beloved home state. Yes they are narrow minded and stuck in their ways, try having all of your relatives there! My husband doesn't get it either, I guess it's just a Nebraskan thing, which doesn't make it right but we're not the only ones either, try moving into Mormon country and getting a job.

Guess you'll have to "hop freight", you should be in Portland or Seattle in ~20 Hrs (if you don't get 'sided' and sent to ND , be sure to choose a 'westbound' !!! bad time of the yr to end up in Chicago, but it is warmer there than Seattle this yr.)
My recent 'econ' grad found a pretty good job in Seattle, and there are lots of bridges to live under, it's really not that bad...I've been laid off for 2 yrs, after spending 32yrs at a company and getting to walk 6 wks before retirement . The bridges are pretty dry, little noisy for sleeping, but you get used to it. Can get shopping carts at Walmart (bring a warm sleeping bag, but not a pretty one... I will get stolen )
You can make big $$ in PNW, (no income tax in WA...) then take your earnings back to NE and buy something nice. Don't buy prop in WA, my prop taxes were $8,000 last yr, was heading to $11,000 this yr, thus the bridge...

I have heard depending on what you went to school to major in that it can be hard to find a job. I guess it also depends on where you're looking. I work as a trainer at Mutual of Omaha. I've been there for about 2 years. One thing I can take advantage of is that they will pay for me to go to school so I can look at what Mutual offers and then go to school for that.

One thing I noticed about Omaha is that there are a lot of insurance companies either headquartered there or have regional or branch offices there. I worked for a big insurance company based in the East Coast, and they have a regional office in Omaha.
I just checked the website for Union Pacific, and they seem to have lots of job openings in Nebraska, not necessarily in Omaha, though.

Other Options
If you can not find a good job, why not go into business for yourself. Franchising is the safest option if you choose to be in business for yourself. It does not have to be food service, and the possibilities are endless as long as you find the right quality franchise. Please contact me if I can assist you with finding the right franchise and act as your free consultant through your due diligence process. I can be reached at alh713@cox.net.

if you dont present yourself in a positive way, it is going to be more difficult to win a position, part of the interview is selling yourself in a positive way...
