After last weeks blast. And now this one. This year's cow/calf operation has taken a beating to put it mildly. I am scared to see the after effects of this hit. We have been lucky so far, but luck I am afraid is about to run out. We placed as many large round bales as we had up to help with more shelter, laid down a generous bed of hay, moved the most fragile of the calves into barns and are hoping for the best. Only good thing so far is the snow has been melting away fast with a couple days in the open areas at least.
I snapped these pics friday afternoon. I don't have the heart to post pics of the snow covered cow/calves.

I was actually looking forward to a few inches here in Omaha. I got all the sleds packed inside the van, all set for today.
I can see the green grass now.

Guru, a lot of the ranchers are snowed in due to high drifts blocking their access roads. However, yesterday and today the snow seems to be melting rapidly when the sun hits it; the snow that was not in drifts is already gone, showing grass through.
One of my new friends shared a story with me yesterday. She had some pigs in a stall and the roof caved in due to the snow. She just knew that they were dead. She went out to dig them out yesterday - and the pigs were in an igloo under the snow, all very much alive! She was so happy when she saw their little noses poking up and snorting! They came out and ate, then - went right back into their toasty 'igloo'! How cool is THAT?

Yup, kallen101 - DH measured it on his cane! I keep telling him we are going to mark his cane off in inches so he always knows how deep it is. HE always asks if I'm talking about snow or manure.. grin.
I really liked it but it doesn't hang around long. Today it got up to 35, the sun was warm and there was no wind, so we have grass showing in the front yard already. The drifts will take some time, though.
