Sidney, NE
Can anybody tell me anything about Sidney, NE? Will my kids enjoy living there? they are 15, 8 & 4. We are from Southern CA. And we also Las Vegas, NV. Las Vegas is NO place to raise kids. want a decent lifestyle for them. Any feedback would be great.

With a population of 6,000 plus there has to be enough things to do to keep them entertained for a while, though it will be a lot less entertaining than CA and Las Vegas, though there should be plenty of outdoor things to do.

Remember you are in a lot more remote part of the country and state... not like you have easy access to a large urban area (like in Southern CA) or a large entertainment area (like LV)... You are 100 miles from Cheyenne, WY; 170 miles from Denver, CO; 220 miles to Kearney, NE; 230 miles to Rapid City, SD; 265 miles to Grand Island, NE; 350 miles to Lincoln, NE; and 400 miles to Omaha, NE.
With that said, that part of the country has some fantastic geography... you go east and you are into the Sandhills, North into Pine Ridge and then Badlands, West and into the foothills of the Rockies. Take time to venture out.
Sidney is a great place and has all you need, but you may have to entertain yourself a little more than you would if you were close to San Diego or Las Vegas.
Personally, I'd choose Sidney over San Diego and Las Vegas, but if you like that large urban lifestyle Sidney could drive you crazy.

You'll face some definite culture shock coming from SoCal or Vegas to rural Nebraska. Sidney is a decent town, but there isn't much in the way of "things to do" beyond the typical small town stuff: sports, church, outdoor activies. Shopping consists of Wal-Mart.
If you are into the outdoors, there is plenty of hunting and fishing around in an hour's drive.
Rentals are tough to come by, and housing is still a seller's market. Cabela's, the main employer, continues to expand, and housing is tough to find. Many people live in the tiny towns nearby and commute.
You will find it to be a friendly, low-crime, good school town.
If I were a betting man, I'd say you are moving there to take a job with Cabela's...

May I ask why you are thinking about Sidney? I have no idea what your situation is, but coming from such a big city, I would think Lincoln or even Kearney would be a better fit. They have alot more to do and would probably keep your kids better entertained.

Kids are adaptable.
They might whine and complain for a while, but there isn't some sort of genetic code contained on a country kid's DNA that makes them more able to "survive" rural boredom.

I got to agree with ItsMeFred (who actually isn't a Fred, LOL). We moved our kids out of Vancouver Washington around that same age to return home to Nebraska, they adapted.
And with the rest of the info you have received here on housing in Sidney I have a feeling they are correct due to Cabela's in the area. If you aren't tied into Sidney, Scottsbluff to the north is a nice town and you will find many very nice towns the size of Sidney across our state, where I am sure you would be welcome.
