You will find Kearney to be a very good City to live in. You have the University of Nebraska at Kearney, formerly known as Kearney State Teachers College. It is on the main railroad route of the Union Pacific Railroad. The people are friendly and will welcome you to Kearney. They will get to know you quickly. The town is about 25,000 to 26,000 people living here. It is part of the Tri City area which is Grand Island, about 40 miles east, the third or fouth largest city in Nebraska and Hastings which is about 60 miles southeast of Kearney. The area is growing with new industry. The main industry is still ag related and they are building more enthanol plants all over Nebraska every year.
I come from a town that is about 75 miles southwest of Kearney and have been in Kearney many times.
I hope that this will help you. You might want to check out the City of Kearney web site if you want more information. The Kearney newspaper is also on line if you want to find out what the news is in Kearney.
I-80 is along the south side of Kearney.
Bob

Kearney seems to be fairly clean place actually, its in a region known as the tri-cities: Grand Island, Kearney and Hastings. Kearney is probubly the best of the three because of UNK and also it seems like the planning was better also then other places of the state. Kearney isnt as conservative as other places in Nebraska either, but this is Nebraska.
I plan of leaving Nebraska, but if I had to pick between Kearney, Grand Island or Hastings: I would pick Kearney

I would pick Kearney also. I went to college in Hastings for a year...seemed too small, although it was bigger than where I was originally from. I've been to GI many times, but it always seems..."industrial" (no offense to anyone living there) when I go there. It seems like Kearney is just more modern and "cleaner" (again...please...no offense). I have only been to Kearney less than a dozen times though.

great place to live
Kearney is an amazing place to live. It's crime rate is low. It has a mall, movie theatres (more on the way), a bowling alley, fairly good food establishments, an impressive college, and an excellent public school system. Whover says there is nothing west of Lincoln is wrong.

At Home Child Care
Does anyone know of an at home child care provider? (Their home) I am looking for drop off/eratic schedule (not 40 hours/week). I will be working by appointment only and want to be able to spend as much time with my son as possible. Also, I prefer no Health and Human Services licensed one, as my child eats organic and I don't want them to force him to eat the required food provided by them. Thank you for any leads!

Mommy2two I would not want to take my kids to one that was licensed by the Nebraska HHS either. They don't care who they give a license to as long as they are willing to pay for the license. Where in the Kearney do you live as my daughter lives south of Kearney and she is a stay at home Mom and watches kids. She don't care what time you drop them off or pick them up. Plus she will feed them what ever you like.

I went to college in Kearney over 10 years ago and still visit occasionally. Great small city, more upscalish than North Platte or Grand Island because of the college. Nice little downtown, sleepy though but I heard they even have a brewery.
I live in Fort Collins now (we are planning to move to upstate NY soon) and Kearney reminds me a lot of Fort Collins but much smaller and slower. Good mix of blue collar and white collar folks.
The area is flat as a rock and there isn't much to do in regards to outdoor activities. The town is surrounded by farmland. There is a river though...a very shallow Platte River.

The "samlltown nice with big city spice" is what generally attracts people here. We are still very conservative though, it's the few outsiders that are comin in that makin us appear otherwise to some. most people have no problem adjusting to kearney though. no matter the race color or creed. as long as you can accept us we can accept you. Outdoor activities in one the best things about Kearney! I love hunting and fishing and you might have to get a farmers permission because there isn't a whole lot of public land that's generally not too hard. They are pretty easy to talk to usually. WE also have A hike and bike trail that runs all the way through town and then some, out to cottonmill park which has a nice little lake and swim hole. Ya the Platte is really shallow henceforth the name "Platte", flat for those of you that don't speak French. It is an amazingly wide, or I guess I should say was an amazingly wide river though it's more like two rivers now. Which reminds of another hike/ bike trail that leads out to Ft. Kearney State rec area. I wish we only had like 26,000 people here this place is growin so fast it's unbelievable. Plus they forget to count the collage kids and the people that aren't technically "legal" American citizens.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Cottonmill Park and Fort Kearney. There's also the Rowe Santuary 10 miles east of Kearney along the Platte. There's a few outdoor things to do and yeah, knowing a farmer is always good.
