I lived in an unnamed Cedar County town for a good year, and though this has nothing to do with religion, I tend to believe everything Amy99 is saying.

I'm white, my wife's Mexican: we were constantly referred to with derogatory terms, and my son was actually asked in school things like "are you legal" and "do you speak English" and with all due respect, Chris, we did come with an open mind, and we are both from small towns ourselves.

After the unnamed town (it's that small where I don't want to embarrass anybody), we moved to Hartington for a couple of years, and found it to be a totally different animal from the unnamed town, but it was only just a few miles away.

We're now back in South Dakota.

This is my two cents: it's hard to believe there's things like prejudice in the world when you've never experienced it. Of course there is prejudice everywhere, but when a town is very very small, and you are a target, it gets to be much.

And to add two more cents: I found the people who were NOT Christian to be twenty times nicer than everybody else, but I honestly think it has nothing to do with their actual religious beliefs. I think it's just because all the members of the church were in a sort of clique, like Chris said, BUT, when that clique ALSO has obvious racist tendencies.

And I would bet a million dollars that I can guess which town Amy is talking about.

I wish the rest of the county was like Hartington.

LA-RAZA means " THE RACE ". These same people who carry this loga call all who don't agree with them racist . MenCHA has insulting to white slogans also . Maybe this is why the people are affraid of latinos ? I be-friended a latino couple and their 7 kids . It was a rude awakening . I see more racism from 'some' latinos than I do whites . We are being divided and it is sad . The division comeswhen people want to force their culture on others while not tolerating the culture of their host nation ,imo.

Race cards and out right lies about American History is not too popular with nationals . Immigrants no longer assimilate like in the past . They put their nations names in front of ours .Latino American ,African American , Muslim American , Hindu American ,etc.. Why not just "American ? I am part Scandinavian and part Irish, I never call myself Irish American .

I'm sure none of this applies to you or your family, just saying it is very common now and American are getting tired of it . In our case minorities move into a community and lay low, until they build up their forces, then it is taken over . We lost part of our retirement to this . Our property values went down to half of value at one time . Our life was threatened and about hundred rounds of bullets were unloaded at our gate in rural south by these 'victims'! Our dirt roads turned into a speedway . New homes put together by illegals are falling apart .

So don't take it personally if others are leary of immigrants .

I agree . The whole world is getting more anti-jew it seems . I don't see how any Christian can be this way . Unless it is not being a Jew that they don't like , but being a liberal since some jews are liberal just like some Christians are . IMO, you can't be a liberal and a Jew or Christian at same time .

United We Stand,Divided We Fall . Jews,Christians, and all races need to come together ,but that will not happen with the new arrivals and those with victim mentalities .

My wife is NOT an immigrant. She's from Minneapolis. She's also NOT a member of LaRaza.

This reasoning is like reading a post by you, and then going on a long diatribe about the Irish Republican Army or Sinn Fein.

And when my son is called "illegal" by his classmates, I absolutely WILL take it personally. He can't even speak Spanish!

Maybe that's what the town thought our plan was. "Move in" (like troops) so we can get hordes of people with Spanish last names from Minnesota moving in. My wife's family sound like the people from the movie "Fargo" for God's sakes!

There aren't too many places like that, but it sounds like the place your referring to is..

What a sad sad town you guys are talking about..

Well to be honest that's what I struggle with. Was it really the right thing? The right thing would've been for us to stay.

I wasn't saying anything about your family , sorry you took it that way . I was just stating how some new immigrants act and it makes everyone suspect . I hope you and your family are treated good now . It is hard to say what we mean on the computer . Sorry if you were offended . I am very offended at a lot of things these days . There are also some latinos who help fight the invasion of illegals .

I saw a green, white and orange or red flag , no red, white and blue flying beside it . I passed it often . One day a man was standing in his front yard so I ask him what nation the flag represented . He said Ireland ! I am more upset with him than the others who do this act of disrespect . I just drove off because I knew all the others on that street didnt care .

Default ...

It's really hard to judge, the right or wrong thing to do is what is best for you and your family Cole, not the weirdo's in that town..

Honestly, the way I see it is there are alot of places that will befriend you and in every state in the country, I just do not see the point in hanging around trouble. That town is obviously full of troubled people that should be dealing with their own insanities instead of spreading it to good people..

Your family was not defeated and under no circumstance did any of you lose.

When I was about 16-24 I had some serious health problems, and that was because of the losing mentality that I had created for myself by haning around negative people all the time. I decided that I do not have the type of mind-set yet to be able to withstand that much pressure for small-simple things that were over-dramatized and so I had decided that the only way for me to feel good about life is to be around the people and situations that allow me to feel good, and not have to worry about 'stepping on stones in a sandbox.' If you catch my drift.

This is why it is a good thing, you left for better opportunities for you and your family, and that should be HEAVILY applauded!!

My friend who lives in Cedar County is one who is in a wheelchair and is a very sweet person. When she was in middle and high school in the small non-county seat community, a number of the kids were just nasty to her, especially the snooty girls (ones who ran the show for prom and that type of stuff and thought they were better than everyone else). She could not wait to get done with HS and hightail it out when she went to college. When I heard that, it saddened me to see how people can so cruel to someone who is differnent (and cannot change who they are). I can understand you, ColeSD, and Amy 99 to a centain degree. I wonder if it is in the same community you are talking about? I am in South Dakota, there are some intersting forums from time to time on the South Dakota forum.

I am not implying that all Nebraskans are the way that they were to my friend, but there are always going to be a few people who are miserable and take it out others, especially those who are different. By and large, I find the vast majority of Nebraskans to be very caring and sincere people.

Hi there, Ehenn and Chris.

OF COURSE I felt defeated! I was pretty bitter about it for a good six months after we left. It was the 21st century, and we were basically being told where we can't live by a group of people. But I appreciate what you said.

And your friend who uses the wheelchair: Overall, I think there's a hostility toward any sort of "difference." But I think it really does stem to what you were talking about: the people there were obviously miserable. I explained to my son (and it sounds snobbish, but my goal was to make him feel better), that most likely the people picking on him had alcoholic parents (I found out from a website that Cedar County had the highest alcohol sales rate or something like that in the country... it's "statistics" so take it for what its worth), but I also knew people in that town who physically had "the shakes" and couldn't function until they started drinking.

I don't think all Nebraskans are like this either. I DO think that the majority of the people in the town we're talking about ARE, though, and I don't think all of Nebraska is like that.

And here's something that burns me: my sister has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair, too, and she visited and wanted to see my son's school: but the school wasn't accessible... and that's a WHOLE OTHER kettle of worms.

Well anyway, that's really what I think it is: bored, depressed people who are dependent on alcohol who decide to take their anger out by picking on someone in a wheelchair or a kid with a Latino mom. To them they were "easy targets" if that makes sense.

We should all go out for Coffee.

By the way, if Amy is keeping up with this, I would kill to find out what town we're talking about but in a private message. The town I'm talking about really is that small and I don't want to make the nice people there feel bad, if that makes sense.
