Oh I'm sorry let me rephrase that for you........... how about, "shootings/murders" everyweekend.

Omaha is Nebraska's murder capital of the state. About 90% happen in a 4 square mile area of town.

What can be done about it?

Default ...

Yes, Omaha has the highest crime rate in the state of Nebraska..

You can accredit that fact to the fact that there are no other large metropolitan areas in Nebraska besides Omaha..

Lincoln is more of a small metropolitan area that is growing, but is going to grow right into suburbia Omaha in the not too distant future..

Omaha's crime rate versus cities its size is low.. So, I think you're making it out to be worse than it really is..

There is only so much you can do with a crime rate for an urban core city the size that Omaha is.. 450,000 after recent annexations..

With that said, the crime rate is lower than most cities in the same size range..

WOW!! Two murders and one shooting in a weekend, Sept 27th and 28th. All with in a 2 mile area.

But, not to worry we are still lower than most cities in the same size range....

As if the beef pack isn’t enough, Gibbon also has a turkey packing plant. There was a Carnegie Public Library in Gibbon, a charming brick structure built by Andrew Carnegie nearly 100 years ago. It was one of the only historically significant buildings in town. So the people of Gibbon tore it down. Gibbon’s school system is dreadful. Drugs abound, thanks in part to the packing plant progeny. Teen pregnancies are commonplace, with a hefty percentage of GHS girls getting pregnant before leaving highschool. Very few GHS graduates go on to achieve any sort of higher education. How many physicians or other professional degrees have you produced lately, GHS? But at least GHS is building a nice new high school building so the teachers can relax in their nice new teacher’s lounge. Of course Gibbon’s property taxes have gone through the roof now to pay for this ineffectual educational edifice. The high property taxes don't bother the illegal immigrants who swarm to Gibbon for choice jobs on the kill floor of the packing plant—they don’t own any property. Gibbon even has traffic, well, sort of. Gibbon is divided by one of the busiest sections of railroad in the country, Union Pacific’s main east-west connector serving the northern half of the U.S. So you can count on a freight train rumbling through the middle of town every ten minutes or so, 24-7, 365 days a year. Gibbon used to call itself smile city. But there isn’t much to smile about these days in Gibbon. Then again, what would you expect from a town named after a monkey?
Reading through this thread I did not find any towns that top Gibbon as Nebraska's worst town. Then again, there aren't many stinky, crime ridden towns swarming with illegal immigrants that have high tax rates, poor schools and trains rumbling through every few minutes. So I guess Gibbon is Nebraska's worst town, right? Can anyone think of anything good about Gibbon?

The old saying..."It's hard to judge a book by its cover" pretty much goes with this community. I lived in Gibbon and or around Gibbon alot of my life! Yes, it has the odor issues, yes it has cosmetic issues, but I say in this case, one cannot judge this town unless you've had the pleasure of getting to know people of that area and community!

I would NEVER vote Gibbon as Nebraska's "worst community" NO WAY! The people that make up the core of that town are wonderful people that take pride in their town, their people and their lives! Hard working, VERY enjoyable.

I think that alot of towns have crime, and in their own ways have stinky personalities! So I suggest that until you've spent good quality time in Gibbon and have got to know the people of that town...don't judge it

It would be like me judging Lexington because of how that town has changed! Cosmetically it has changed a ton over the years, but I don't know enough about the community to judge it fairly!

Lexington makes it to the top 5 worst towns easily!

What is sad about Lexington is that you do have people there that want to make it a nice town, and are trying hard to make it a nice town, but then you have the little #!%ants, who are bound a determined to destroy that town. "as to which they are succeeding". It is sad when you go from a "Andy Griffith" type of town, to someplace you would never even raise your dog in.. Lexington would be well in the top five.

So? How many cities of Omaha's size 'doesn't' have two murders in a single weekend?

Big cities have a constant battle against crime, all of them do, and OMaha is no exception. However, Omaha must do a better job than 2/3rds+ cities its size, because the violent crime rate and murder rate per capita is lower than most cities its size..

I am not talking about the period when the house parents started. before that counselors were single men, with many abusive predators. ask anyone their at that time. there was no one to report to that would accept the word of a resident over a counselor. my grandmother left me some money that i never saw. of course nebraska has some of easiest statue of limitations for types of abuse so hmmmm. Im old and pretty sick now sothis story will be out their pretty soon

When we would drive up to Minnesota to fish, we would sometimes go through Winnebago, a pitiful town on a pitiful reservation. I was just learning about Indians and it would always make me so sad. But that was a long time ago. I would guess that unless they have a thriving casino it wouldn't be much different today.

On the other hand, I visited Sutton in August and found it to be delightful. My Germans-from-Russia great-grand parents settled there in 1884. I have only positive things to say about NE towns but it makes me quite melancholy to see how many of the smaller ones are declining or even dying.
