Just a quick look in the yellow pages, there is a Ben Franklin (variety type store) and Sanger's Market (grocery). I haven't been to Basset in a while, so can think of any of the top of my head. Remember it is the county seat of Rock County, so I believe there is a small fairgrounds there also.

Maybe you could visit Bassett, there are a few towns nearby, most larger, all of these towns are along Nebraska highway 20, which runs through Bassett. West is, Long Pine has around 350 people and is 8 miles away, and Ainsworth has about 1,900 people and is 16 miles away. East is Stuart, which has around 650 people and is around 20 miles away, Atkinson, which has around 1,250 people and is 28 miles away, and O'Neil, which has around 3,750 people and is 47 miles away, all of the distances are if you drive on highway 20.

i would love nothing more to visit Bassett and I plan on it, but being a student with a limited budget, I'm not sure when that will be and I don't want to put my whole novel on hold until i do. But yes, I definitely will someday, I've always wanted to take a roadtrip through Central USA

Nearly 200 video reports and counting...
One of the Nebraska TV stations located in Kearney offers a weekly segment called " The Road Less Traveled" that visits towns across most of the state. You could spend a lot of time watching videos of these towns to see if one jumps out at you for your novel. Interviews with town residents as well as historic, travel, and business information is usually provided.
Good luck with your project!

You might want to email their Chamber of Commerce and their Economic Development group... those groups are generally more than willing to provide the type of information on businesses that you are looking for. One of the websites I provided earlier I think had the links to both of those groups.

Keep in mind that Bassett is just about it for Rock County, the only other town in the county is Newport with 98 people.
