Property taxes are high in Nebraska, but I remember a homestead exemption (I think that was what it was called) on property taxes for seniors and other qualifying individuals. Also, food and fuel was probably less than it is here in Arizona where I currently live.

A couple of things I really like about McCook are:
Low humidity (as compared with central and eastern Nebraska)
A viable downtown (so many of the small towns struggle to keep "Main Street" alive, but McCook seemed to be doing a pretty good job of that).

I always thought McCook was a very nice town.

I must agree, though, about the distance to a truly major shopping area. Also, be prepared that home prices will probably not appreciate much, but then it doesn't look like they're going to anywhere in the U.S.
