I've been here (in thr forum) a while looking at the Western part of NE. Next summer I'm going to try to get out there and look in the Scootsbluff area. I love hunting and the outdoors so this might not be best for you. It's such an individual thing but NE seems to be a much nicer and less expensive state overall. Weather seems better too. NE still has cold, snow etc.in winter and heat in summer but without the horrible humidity that NY has. I believe 50% or so humidity is considered high in NE compared to 80% and up in NY. I'll be retiring in 2010 ans no way I'll be staying in NY.
Uh jeep-jeep... I almost hate to say this but it's pretty common for eastern Nebraska to have humidity in the 80-90% range.
Western Nebraska, otoh, tends to be quite a bit lower. But then we also get considerably less rain, too...

jeepjeep- I'm glad I am not the only native NY'er to feel this way! Crime is on the rise again, I see a lot "crap" resurfacing that I didn't see in the late 90's.
The commute is horrible, my worst day at work isn't as bad as my ride in. The way people drive here is just amazes me. They can't read or write English but there they are behind the wheel of a car or worse truck. The blatant arrogance and ignorance drives me insane. I too was looking at western NE. I wont be making a trip out there until the new year maybe spring. I love the outdoors myself and look foward to taking a walk after dark w/o mace or constantly looking over my shoulder.
I have a long ways to go before I can retire. I don't think I can make it another 30 years here in NY.
The HIGH humidity I'm used too...

High humidity in Nebraska does exist, but in NYC being mainly an island has a much higher humidity average than nebraska.. The further east you go in nebraska the higher the humidity, but with that said, E Nebraska's humidity is no worse than the average US state and while E Nebraska's occasional 80% humidity does happen, our average highs in July reach 88 degrees.

Compare that to all states south and east of here and you will see that our summers have some hot days, but nothing compared to many other states in this country.

I was talking about western NE. Guess that wasn't clear.

I lived out in Scottsbluff for about 2 years, and I could really tell the difference in the summer time when we came home with the humidity.
My cousins live out in the wildcat hills area, and they hibernate inside when they come back home for the weekend,
Scottsbluffs humidity is nothing compared to Eastern Nebraska.

Every town in Nebraska is a "small town" compared to nyc. You'd probably go crazy any smaller than Omaha.

Nebraska has many small towns, and larger ones that still feel small. I would tell you that Fremont is close to Omaha but, don't even think of living there, I've been living in and out of that town since the early 90's, and let me tell you its filled with drug users, crime, vandalism. I understand any place is but, here its rather out of control for the size of the town. Theres many pluses to this town but, the crime, and drug trade really kinda block out the good points.
After 4 years back in this town I have watched crime, drug cases etc. rise sharply in the news and in the town paper. Any day you will find at least 2-3 alcohol related offenses whether adult, or minor. Not to mention at least 3-4 drug charges per month, and thats not counting the big busts.
Not to long ago 2 people where charged with a very large quanity of meth, and i believe cocaine.
I know things are bad all over, and maybe i have my hopes to high but, for this small of town all the problems just seem to keep escalating and the police force doesn't seem to be able to keep up with any of it.
I know some good small towns that have gotten good reviews are Louisville, Ashland, and Pierce.
Ashland is a wonderful small town. my grandparents have lived there my entire life. Its small enough for the small town feel, Omaha isn't too far for a commute and Lincoln isn't either. Theres a lot to do around the area from Mahoney State Park, to Sac Air Museum. the town itself is very charming.

I don't think I would go crazy, I will have to adjust. I never liked NYC and the part of Queens where I've lied all my life has just and continues to deteriorate before my eyes.

Princessbelle- I don't think your hopes are too high, no one should have to live or go through that crap. After a while it takes a toll on you...
