The fancy-schmancy Haymarket? An underused and overhyped tourist trap of bars, private businesses in search of an upscale address, restaurants and expensive shops with a lot of expensive junk - and I do mean junk. Only good thing I found there was The Mill Coffee Shop. NOM.
The Embassy Suites... ahhhhhh.... I'm not much for fancy motels - usually as long as it has a bath, bed, and coffee in the room, I'm fine - but this one, oh my goodness was worth the extra dime. The folks there were absolutely wonderful, and treated us like we were their rich aunt and uncle come to stay. Normally motel restaurant food is merely, yawningly, so-so, but that one is exquisite.
Granny did you try Buzzard Billy's, it has great cajun food and even alligator tail. There is a Nebraska store which has some nice stuff in the Haymarket as well including wines from around the state but is kind of expensive. You could probably find some of the tourist knicknacks from there cheaper somewhere else.

Thanks, SCentralNEGuy - but the Nebraska store when I was there was displaying mainly all types of candy from elsewhere. Their other selections were very very limited. As for Buzzard Billy's Cajun food, I didn't go there - I had other plans for dinner, and DH doesn't care for Cajun. I've spent a LOT of time in Nawlins and unless they have real beignets, crawdads, chicory coffee, and muffalettas, I don't consider them "cajun" - and I've eaten alligator tail since I was a teenager, so it is no great shakes to me! Different strokes, I guess...
