The good & bad
Winnebago is in the Winnebago Indian Reservation about 10 miles south of Sioux City. I’ve not been to the city of Winnebago, but I’ve been in the area of N-E Nebr. So I’m speaking from only an opinion at this point and nothing is absolute fact.
In and around the area there is very little manufacturing, business, and shopping. The area is mostly agricultural ranch and farming. As in most areas of the country where there is limited or very little commerce there are also very few jobs or good paying jobs. This can be a factor in a life style of living being much lower then elsewhere, and higher crime due to unemployment.
I’ve never yet seen any Native American Indian Reservation (anywhere) that looked like they were at or above a milled class way of life in this country. Unfortunately poverty and unemployment seem to cause part of this problem. The standard way of life for most Native Americans is to live close to their ancestors “old ways” of live style and customs for their tribe. This then gives an appearance of (if not reality) a poverty way of live.
There are Native American Laws that must be observed by everyone when on their land. This can be a problem for others who fail to respect or be aware of them, ignorance of the law is no excuse and you may find yourself in trouble for some violation that would normally be unthinkable elsewhere.
All that being said, I have to add that I have visited several reservations around the country and have the utmost respect for Native Americans who hold true to their beliefs and customs, these are proud people who have a keen knowledge of life that most of us seem to not be aware of or care to believe in.
