Question Moving To Lincoln

Hey all! My husband and I are planning to move to Lincoln in the near future due to a job transfer. We are currently living in St.Louis, MO which is where we have been our entire lives. We are not afraid of weather (ours is pretty much crazy here) or schools (no kids) but we would like to know what areas to avoid. Also we would be looking to rent an apartment for the first 6months to a year until we get on our feet, so does anyone have some suggestions? I would really be grateful for any info. Thanks!

Here a couple previous threads that may help a little:

Where in the city is the job located and are you looking for newer neighborhoods or older ones?

Lincoln has no "terrible" neighborhoods but obviously it's big enough that there's some you want to avoid. Generally, if you pull up the map on google I'd avoid the area bordered:

on the south by South St.
on the north by Cornhusker Highway
and on the east by approx 35th st.

Again, that's very general as to the south it transitions to country club area really fast. Also, again, Lincoln is nothing like larger cities so Lincoln's "bad" is nothing like larger cities. The "worst" would be north 27th st in the area described.

The nice area of Lincoln is the entire south, that's where all the new growth is. The east edge of Lincoln, 84th st, has been the east edge for 40 years now. Only recently has new growth begun along 84th.

I lived in Tanglewood apartments in the middle of the city at 46th and O St. It was a little overpriced and very "1990" but the advantage was it was smack in the center of Lincoln. I would recommend it to someone. You can look at their website at richdale.com The 2 properties they also manage to the southeast are new and very nice but again, a little overpriced.

If you want to be in the fancy, south part of town, go to forrent.com and look for the two places with "Williamsburg" in their name. Those are nice.

Hi! My name is Denise and I have an apartment--it is a ONE bedroom apartment in North lincoln--near 27th and I-80. I have lived there for 3 1/2 years and I believe they were built a year prior to that. My lease is up at the end of May 2009, but am losing my job and need to break my lease. It is perfect for you and your husband. I am ready to move out but need to either find someone to take over my lease or the apt manager is also assiting me.
I have never searched on line for someone to lease out my apt, but was told that it might be the thing to do!! If you are interested??
Not sure how this blogging works...don't want to give my number over the net--but if you reply back, I can give you my number/email address, etc.

Thanks in advance!
Denise

I'm going to be moving to Lincoln next week from Denver. I'm trying to escape the rat race and a huge corporate employer, at least for a while. I'd originally wanted to move to Omaha to be closer to family and be able to live downtown. I'm a city boy and like the energy of the downtown areas of big cities. I accepted the position in Lincoln because it was good enough and I though with it being a college town, maybe it wouldn't be too bad.

I grew up in North Platte, college in Kearney, but after that I've lived in a lot of places around the country mostly bigger cities. This stop in Lincoln won't be for very long. 4-5 years max.

Having read around the internet and this forum, I'm not sure what things are going to be like. And honestly I'm not sure what questions I have. I like to travel, but don't go often enough that going to Omaha to fly out would be a problem. Museums, independent cinema, live rock or jazz music. I know being a college town, I should have access to cultural things, but I'm just a little concerned that Lincoln will be too much a small town feel.

I'm also curious about what dating would be like? I'm 42 and have been divorced for a few years and would like to get back in the game, as it were. I would think in a small town it would be easier than in Denver, but then I'm not sure about finding women of my age who share my interests.

So, I guess other than "you can go to Omaha" are there enough "cultural", and I don't want that to sound too snobby, things to do in Lincoln itself? Can non-students get access to the University's goings on? I intend to start a Master's next year, but until then what can I do?

I know, that was all over the place. So any help would be very much appreciated!

I love Lincoln. I've never lived there but being from Omaha I visited often. Lincoln has some nice neighborhoods and a vibrant downtown especially during the school year.
